Default Oil Return Pipe Query

My car is a 1930 coupe, I have bought an "Aford-able" oil filter kit and a 90 degree filter adaptor. Whilst waiting for the oil pan to drain ready for removal I thought I would fit the new valve cover, so without checking I went ahead, nice, fits a treat except the oil return pipe, to short. Looking at pics on the Barn I have the earlier pipe and cover and it states they are not interchangeable, I must be reading it wrong, or missing something because the way I see it the new valve cover shouldn`t fit ? or do I just need to get hold of the newer pipe ?
