Default Emergency...Brake

I did all the brakes over on my 29. The Emergency Brake seemed fine on jack stands but would not hold on a steep hill. I kept taking up "slack" by turning the rod clevis (below) until the brake rod bottomed out on the clevis. I still had thread on the rod so I cut the top of the rod and then screwed the clevis all the way down the rod with no lock nut either. The car rolls easily and now the emergency brake will lock the wheels up. My question(s) are: Are the new rods different some way? Did I simply take up wear in all the combined parts that are 86 years old? Did I do anything wrong? It just seems weird cutting the rod and screwing the clevis as far down as possible. Then again...it works and works well!

EMERGENCY BRAKE ROD CLEVIS For Year(s): 28-31

The adjustable eye used on the end of the emergency brake rod (# 4230). This is a cast iron clevis. Need 2 per car.
