Well as the good weather comes to an end here in PA I'm getting ready to tear down my 37 pickup and finish the odds and ends. Main objective is resealing the transmission (3 speed on the floor) It has what I believe is an output seal but I want to do everything with it. Also is there a carrier bearing at the back of the tranny or what is it? What in the drive line from the tranny to the differential could I replace? I want to make it last another 77 years!

Wipe the rear of the trans off nice and clean, then drive the truck for 25 miles. Now get back under it and see if the leak is coming from the cluster gear and/or rev idler gear gear shaft area. The bores that hold these shafts do get wallowed out and that is a guaranteed leak. Lest we forget the shafts them- selves, if not genuine Ford, are usually as much as .0015 undersize. A tight fit is all that keeps trans fluid from leaking here. I believe Mac Van Pelt has these shafts and they are made to the correct diameter PLUS they feature 'O' ring grooves to further insure leak proofing Remember one thing....no matter how thick and syrupey your trans fluid is when you pour it the trans it achieves the consistancey of kerosene after 10 or 15 miles. There are front and rear ball bearings which have neoprene grease seals which certainly go a long way to eliminate trans leaks in that area. Van Pelt I'm pretty sure has these as well. I build a bunch of early trans each year and Mac Van Pelt is my source for parts that actually fit and perform as they should. Charlie ny |

Is it leaking?
The clamshell at the back of the trans at the rear transmission mount where the torque tube connects has two gaskets and a cork seal. I replaced these after the trans was rebuilt and reinstalled. Are these the pieces you are talking about? The first photo shows the clamshell and the old seal. The gaskets and seals are available from all the vintage V-8 Ford vendors. |

Before you dig into the trans, pick up a copy of this book from Mac Van Pelt. It will be a big help to you.

Do as Charlie nY says just to see where the leak is. You can replace the cork seal without pulling the torque tube, even the thin paper gaskets can cut and put in , in a pinch. After all these years its very hard to keep them oil tight, never really meant that way as Charlie pointed out things like the shafts are a machine fit. the rear bearing in the trans is an open bearing and oil [in a small way] goes through and helps to supply the uni with lube. you can see how those thin paper gaskets can leak easy..

Fords don't leak-they just mark their territory. I would vote on the shafts leaking where they exit the case at rear. I cleaned these areas very good with brake cleaner and smeared a heavy coat of permatex # 2 on the area just to see if that what was causing the leak--they were--the permatex is still on the trans, doesn't look neat but will work until I pull trans for another reason
