Manifold heaters?

I purchased a manifold heater called a "Director" but I seem to be having trouble getting it into place...the clip bracket on the distributor seems to be sticking out too far and won't let it rest in place. Also, there is no apparent way to hold it in place to keep it from rattling. Has anyone ever ran into this before...and how did...or should I correct this.

Hi Tom,

Do you have a 'Director Special' and is one large piece of of cast iron. If so, that is the heater that I have in my car. Are you referring to the cover that goes ver the hole by the dist. bolt? If so I just left mine off. That manifold will roast you in the summer-I garuntee it!

Do they roast you even for the driver of a LHD?

I was thinking that they would definitely roast a RHD driver in summer.

May have to make up a cover plate to go over the front in summer so fan does not blow wind through, or I can see the firewall getting very hot.

Most of the guys here that have manifold heaters just take them off in the summer.

Tom, While you got the dist. cap off, check the pivot post for the point movable arm & see if it wobbles side to side. Many are loose & need a TAP-TAP-TAP under the bottom of the top plate, where it is riveted over. It's often overlooked & can cause the car to run like crap & causes fast & uneven rubbing block wear & poor point contact alignment & difficulty setting the point gap properly. They were LOOSE on both my cars when I got them. On my first car, that was what prompted me to go to the so called "MODERN" POINTS. See, there IS a method to my MADNESS! ----KRAZY? YES!--Like a FOX!

Thanks so much Mike for posting for me. You'll have to teach me the trick. As you can see the heater will not drop down to rest on the manifold because the bracket on the distributor sticks out so far.
Bill, everything is pretty tight and solid there. The car runs great once I learned how to set the points. Can I attempt to grind the bracket and the heater to make it slide in place. Has anyone ever experienced this before? Suggestions welcome.

Tom, Could the manifolds have been planed too much, or at the wrong angle?

Try pulling the dist. and then fitting the heater, and finally replacing the dist. It may work.

I had the same trouble with an autolite heater. I just ground away some material on the heater where it was hitting the distributor and now it slips right on. It won't take much.

Tom Wesenburg, you might have hit the nail on the head. The thought had occurred to me, but I have no idea how much was planed when I had it done. I'll try grinding a little and see what happens.
