I put an iPhone tap into my original AM radio and play a collection of 50s & 60s music.

Gene Krupa, Glen Miller, and the Dorsey Bros. All have a fantastic beat to a good sounding V8 with straight pipes. Oh my God what music!

I make my own discs. I have several classical ones.
I also have several with traditional country.(Hank, Johnny, Kitty, Webb, Grandpa etc)
On one of these is the song, Saturday Night Drag Race by Scatman Crothers.
That roadster with the half inch stroker leaving the starting line at Bonneville sends shivers up my back.
Just for trivia's sake here is some info on how that record came about.

"Info about Saturday Night Drag Race record.
In 1948, Robert E. Petersen began publishing Hot Rod Magazine, the first national publication for a small but growing group of enthusiasts. Arguably the first hot rod cartoonist, Tom Medley created the "Stroker McGurk" cartoon character while he was also the ad salesman for Hot Rod. Subsequently, he became publisher of Rod & Custom Magazine and helped create the first-ever hot rod swap meet, in the early '50s at the L.A. Roadsters' Father’s Day get-together, and the first Street Rod Nationals in 1970. A top photographer and enthusiastic automotive entrepreneur, Medley also had the idea for Colossal (Enterprises’) Hot Rod Records in the early '50s (although the music was the work of Kid Ory's Dixieland Jazz Band, fronted by Scatman Crothers). Colossal's "big hit" was the double-sided "Saturday Night Drag Race," which received an unexpected plaudit in Time magazine and paralleled Arkie Shibley's "Hot Rod Race".
The only way you could buy the record was mail order through Hot Rod Magazine.. for the extravagant price of $1".

I listen to WEVL 89.9 Memphis. Listen online at wevl.org.
They play this kind of stuff as well as all other types of music. No commercials, just PSAs and station promotions.
All DJs are volunteers and bring their own music. Every couple hours or so, it's different music. Blues, rock, celtic (irish traditional), classic gospel, electronic, classic country, old time (1920s) country, blue grass, new grass, show tunes, movie tunes, singer/song writer, 30s/40s big band, New Orleans Jazz, Doo Wop, etc.
My favorite shows are Friday mornings at 10 AM (central time) Down in the Alley, and Saturdays at 1PM, Through the Cracks. Saturday mornings at 10 is Strands of the Celtic Knot. Check out the website for a schedule of music types. wevl.org
Another great thing about this station is the DJs give you some history and facts about the music. Each DJ plays the music they know about. And they know all about it. I've learned so much about music from these guys and gals...
They do ask for donations/memberships, but I've been a member for many years now and it's worth every penny.

Pete, your a man after my own heart. I was byeing those Hot Rod mags when I was 13. Loved that Stroke Mc Gurk page. I have 100's of country CD;s every one of the good country, not this s--t today thay call country. Learn to play guitar on Hank Snow on 33-1/3records. Still have them. Had a county band for 25yr's. In fact the Portlander is coming up today, we're going to build a flathead, I told him to bring his axe and we'll take a break and do a little picking. Never out grow it. Right on Fibber McGee! I am 43 - remember Grandpa playing Big Band when I was very little, still play it while cruising in his 41, it's a real time travel on a summers evening bopping along a country lane.
I also like Django Reinhardt, and for some real hip sounds check out Glenn Crytzer, he captures perfectly the prewar period music but is a newer artist.

I've come back on here because some doctoral student should do a study of all of this. There are those so dyed in the wool that they will not listen to anything outside the same generation as their ride/restoration. Then, there are those of us (interestingly, they are probably those of the same approximate age) who will listen to modern tunes that have a nostalgic flair or new artists who play the old type of music. I am thinking that those who are like me, listening to modern artists doing the nostalgic renditions of new songs, are the best.
