YOM license plates
I want to try and get New Jersey to allow year of mfg. license plates for antique automobiles. I need to know what states do allow the use, so I can research the info for our legislators. Thanks for the help, Ed Saniewski

Re: YOM license plates
California does. There is an annual fee for them, and the plates are registered in the owners name, they must be released if they are to go with the car when it is sold.

Re: YOM license plates
Just Google "Year of Manufacturer Plates" and a number of States' DMV regs pop up.

Re: YOM license plates
I think Maryland is as simple as it can get... A set can be restored or not with close to original colors..(not all beat up & rusted)..No pictures of car needed, A one time fee of $40.00 & you never have to re-new..Just take them in to DMV one time & go home & mount on car.. its over..

Re: YOM license plates
Alaska allows it, 2 plates. Good luck finding anything in the 28-31 time frame!

Ours is also one of those simple states where you just hand them a plate, they look it up to make sure nobody else is using it, and then send you on your way. Takes about 15 minutes. PM me for the phone number of a guy in CO who knows exactly how to get the legislation passed, assuming your legislators care anything for the will of the people -- a rarity these days.

You just have to read far enough!

Re: YOM license plates
Illinois allows Year of Manufacture plates. The car must be registered as an Antique Automobile and the modern Antique plates need to be carried in the car while YOM plate is in use. TM

Re: YOM license plates
That list is years out of date for N.H.The cut off year of 1942 was a proposed number, not the one passed into law. When they first let us run YOM plates,we could only use them on the front.I was one of the first and I put one on a 53 MGTD.I also have one on my 54 Studebaker. The DMV people took a look the plates, wrote the numbers down, and certified them for use.As of last August we can now run YOM front AND rear,pre-1960.It is free,we just have to register as an antique, and carry the modern issued antique plate in the car. That costs about $12.per year.Once they've looked at the plates and certified them we don't have to show them again to recertify.Just show the prior cert and they copy it onto a current one.

Re: YOM license plates
YOM plates are allowed in Ohio. You must carry your state issued historical plate in the vehicle also.

- Antique Vehicle License Plates. Vehicles displaying these plates may only be driven to and from an antique auto show or exhibition, service station or demonstration. $30 for 5 years. Only this type of register vehicle may display YOM plate (carrying the actual AV plates in the car.) - Expanded-Use Antique License Plates. Vehicles displaying these plates during the months of January-March and November-December may only be driven to and from an antique auto show or exhibition, service station or demonstration. Vehicles displaying these plates during the months of April-October may be driven on the highways without being subject to the restrictions of a standard antique vehicle plate. $51 per year. I do not wish to be restricted on how and where I can drive my roadster, so I register as a regular passenger car - $99 per year. technically, I cannot display YOM plates. But I choose to do so anyway - I have the correct passenger plate on the rear and my '31 plate on front. Here's to your success in getting NJ to allow YOM plates...

Re: YOM license plates
Oklahoma allows them. You check with tax commission to make sure that number is not issued. Buy and carry the current year tag. Buy a sticker for the windshield for the yom tag.

Re: YOM license plates
Georgia allows YOM plates. You have to have a modern plate in the car but not displayed. Pretty hassle free really. Also, a one page paper signed by the tag agent is required.

Re: YOM license plates
NH does, on the front only. It needs to be inspected by the state and the number on the YOM plate is added to your registration. You also need to run the State issued current year plate on the rear.

Re: YOM license plates
As of August 7th of this year N.H.allows YOM plates front and rear.I had been running them on the front for years.I had matching plates for the YOM plates on four cars,so I went to Concord to get them certified as pairs to run.Turns out they didn't have the certification forms for pair printed yet.Just the certs for the single plate to hang on the front. They told me that where the number was already recorded with them to just mount the other plate on the rear and carry on.They told me to be sure and carry the modern plate in the cars, and NOT to display two plates on the rear. The date the new law was to take effect fell on a Saturday,so in reality it took effect the following Monday.I was there at the Concord DMV when they opened to get my pairs certified.Turns out I didn't have to where I already had them currently recorded to me as singles.
