Couple of Questions??????

Some weeks ago there was a Thread concerning the different spray paint options and their health risks. I want to start priming some parts and need some help. I've searched and can't find the Thread, any help?

Second, anyone know of a good chrome shop in S. Florida?????

All of the two coimponent or 2K primers use a isocyanate hardner. These primers and paints are hazardous to your health . I have had good results with Featherfill primer. Featherfill is the best high build primer that I have ever used and it uses peroxide as an activator and contains NO isocyanate. Large bare metal areas will need to be roughed up for tooth or better adhesion.

We used the Featherfill primer with great success on the Roadster Pickup project. But you do need to rough the metal for good results. One picture shows the surface being worked, the second was the car at the SEMA show, Dennis Gage of My Classic Cars stopped by to see us.

Ok, I can't stand it!.... No snow, no really cold weather (low of about 55 deg) and not very many bugs! Yes, we have a Dupont paint store, and a PPG supplier. As they say here, "No bad days." Oh, and no banditos here! :-)

As a side note, I did win "Best of Show" last weekend at the local car show with the car in my avatar. :-)

Ben I do miss Mexico but I lived where the banditos called home, had a good friend killed in the narco war. I had my rdst pu painted in Mexico, PPG is big there.

Jeff, I have an AC unit in my shop so I can work now in the dead of winter. I killed a water mocasin on my dad's porch the other day and took my grandson canoing recently. We caught over 100 crappie style fish and counted over 100 aligators. You got to read between the lines in the Chamber of Commerce ads!!!

Still wish I could find that thread on the paint dangers..............

Best bet is to do what the pros do:
3M #07192 large or Gerson #8211 large paint respirator. these are cheep $22 -28. when finished using, seal them in the resealable bag it comes with, then seal it in tupperware container.
These have charcoal in the filter and you cannot smell ANY of the fumes at all, which means you are protected from them. Use when mixing also. Although you can replace the filters most just toss it and get a new one. Once you can smell the fumes the charcoal is used up, toss it, use a new one. This is what all the pros around here use, the PPG shop sells them by the ton

Jeff, you are right about everything except one lol. The cold freezing temps don't stop mosquitoes the size of Hummingbirds, just ask someone who lives in Alaska. The biggest and most plentiful "Hummingbirds" this Florida boy has ever seen!

Just go to your local paint and body supply store and ask for the MSDS sheets for what ever product you plan to use.

Iso's are colorless and odorless and will be filtered out by the charcoal filter of a mask. Iso's are absorbed through the skin. The issue with masks are they tend to not fit right or can leak around the edge if you have hair or if they are poor fitting. There are other factors. When you are painting you need to move a lot of air to keep the over spray under control. So if you move a lot of air the concentrations will be kept down. You need to keep covered as the number one exposure path is through the skin during mixing (according to the researcher I talked to)!

The symptoms of Iso reactions are industrial asthma as you develop and allergic reaction to the chemical. Early symptoms are chest tightness a while after painting. It gets worse with subsequent exposures to the point where people have died from asthma attacks.

The other chemicals in all paints are just as dangerous. They cause internal organ damage to the brain, liver and kidneys.

You should not run away from the paints. They are wonderful to work with as they can be easy to sand and are are stable and do a better job at bonding and sealing. This means you will have a paint job that works much much better then the old stuff.

I suggest you look into an air supply mask of some kind. They can be pricey, but they also have a very high resale value. So you could buy one used and resell it with a minimal loss years later. Check out what they get for them on Ebay.

You also need to cover up tightly when you spray. I get the painting coveralls from Homedepot/ Lowes. The added benefit is they tend to not have fibers that will jump off and foul the paint. You clothes and the dirt hidden on the part are the 2 biggest sources of dirt in the paint.

Lastly, read the directions. The biggest mistake people make is to use wrong grit paper.

I know Model Aircraft builders that had that happen from too much use of "crazy glue".

Slightly off topic, but when using urethane, what compound(s) and pads do you use to polish it out after 2000 paper?

AC in your shop in the winter? To reduce the humidity?

Well yes, the AC does help to reduce the humidity but can't work in there without it either as it is too hot.

Thanks for the input on the paint, sure do want to paint as much of the car as I can.
