Correct e brake location

Hi guys, my 29 CCPU has the e brake in front of shifter. It's a July 8th built motor & speedo is sep 29 so I'm guessing truck was finished in oct or so. I read the e brake changed in July 29. Should it have the e brake on side or would the Trans have been built before the change but not used until after? Thanks in advance.

You'd probably be OK with the push button handle in front of the shifter, since the trucks got the latest changes after the cars.

I think you'd be OK with the handle in either location.

Is there a date on the gas tank?

Tom I could not find a date on the fuel tank anywhere. Tank has never been repainted so I don't believe it's been covered over or filled in.

Tom was referring to the firewall. The dates were stamped on the firewall of the tanks on the driver's side. But sometimes not.

Yes that's the area that I checked but I couldn't find anything.

I believe gas tank dates were discontinued in september 1929.

If I recall Vanspeeds car is July 29 and does not have the stamp

By the dates I think that your brake handle is right where it should be. I belive that the switch over from the service brake on the left to the center took place twords mid 29. Does yours actuate the service brakes or does it have seperate emergency brake shoes?

My Tudor is stamped 7/17/29 and has the right-hand brake. I'm the second owner so I know it's original.

I'm sure you meant "MID 28" for the parking brake lever moving from the left to the center.

Racur96, Since the speedometer is so easily changed, I don't think I'd rely on it's date, unless you know for sure that it's never been changed.

Hi, I'm not sure if its ever been changed or not, it hasn't been in the last 40 years but I'm not sure about anything before that. What other things would determine a closer date. Thanks

The best source of all the changes are the "SERVICE BULLETINS" and the "JUDGING STANDARDS".

By Sept. 1929 the oil return pipe would be in the lower position, your truck would have Twolite headlamps, might have 2 tooth steering. There are many more changes from earlier models. The trouble is many of these can be easily changed, so you need to look through these two books and see how many fit your truck and see if they look original to the truck.

When the engine was stamped it had the transmission installed.

I have a November 1928 AA and a January 29, 1929 AA and they both have the left hand service parking brake. I think that by mid 29 the switch over was probably completed. The cross shaft on the 28 is the older style and the 29 has the newer style cross shaft.

The best way to determine the date would be to remove the 8 bolts holding the cab on lift it to check the serial number on the frame. The serial number will be on the top of the frame to the left of the two carrage bolts securing the front left corner of the cab.

Does the serial number on the engine have two A's before the numbers?
Often the engines were changed instead of rebuilding the original. There was a period of time the the AA engines only had one A for a while but I'm not sure what months they were.

If both the engine serial number and the frame numbers match that would certainly be a bounus for you.

Ok I've got some aug-dec 29 service bulletins, ill have to find some more and grab the judging book. My truck just has 1 a before it but its just a regular pickup & not the aa. I've just bought 2 motors to use until I get my original rebuilt and one has the push button handle that's missing on my truck. Just trying to see which is correct before rebuild Trans. Ill also check on steering box and see what kind I have.

Check page 379 in the SERVICE BULLETINS when you work on your tranny. If your tranny is original to the truck, this will help date it also.

Our 1929 non-oval-window Business coupe has a mid Feb 1929 date on the fire-wall. It has the squeeze style hand brake lever sitting in front of the shift tower. It also has the early style pre-twolite headlites, a single drum tail-lite, and electric wiper, which all seem to fit together in the correct era.
