Hi Men !

Q: What would be the most simplistic way to remove the steeringbox/column from a 1940 Ford sedan?
(wantingto remove box for rebuild)

Working under the hood, remove the shift rods from the levers. Remove the two bolts from the clamp that holds the shift tube to the column then loosen the clamp at the steering box that holds the column tube on, unplug the horn wire where it comes through the bottom of the steering box. Then from inside the car remove the steering wheel then disconnect the wires to the ignition switch and remove the two bolts that holds the ignition lock housing to the dash and remove the cover plate at the floor. Under the car,remove the drag link and the engine pan if your car still has one,and remove all but one bolt on the steering box to frame ,this will allow the column to drop down inside the car then you can slide the column off the steering shaft. The column cant be removed without lowering it first because it will hit the roof.Be shure to cover your seat just in case.Then remove the last bolt and drop it out the bottom.While you have it all out it would be a good time to check the bushing in the top of the column also.
