Default To sell or not to sell car to Austria

I'm selling a 35 ford coupe on ebay (200650871533). I got a call from a guy in Austria that wants it. Wanted me to stop auction but I said no. Does anyone have any first hand experience of selling a car outside the USA. I told him in no way will the car leave my house untill all funds have clear to my bank and he said no problem. IF he is the winning bidder, I guess I got nothing to lose but to sell it to him. I have sold several parts to people in Austria but never a complete car. And I'm not knocking austria folks. I believe we have some on this forum. Anyway, I've just never done it and would like some feed back from someone who has, thanks

I sold a 29 roadster to a guy in France. He was high bidder on E-bay. He wired transfered the money to my bank account and arranged for shipping. No problems.

I have sold and shipped vintage cars to Germany, Austrailia, and Czech Republic. No problems. A little time consuming. I did have an issue with a foreign check being deposited at my bank. The bank was going to charge for conversion. I mailed the check back and required a paypal payment. The buyer agreed to pay the payment fee.
I tried to help the buyers as much as I could with his shipper, coordinating a pickup time, and loading. Stay in touch with the buyer, take pictures as you load the car and after you load, to verify condition when it leaves your possession. Customs will need title (if a title state), a notarized bill of sale, vehicle registration. Good luck.

That is one fine looking `35 coupe! My son sold a 1954 Victoria to someone in Victoria, Australia with no issues. Take lots of pictures as it is being loaded up in case there is damage in shipping.

i sold one of my corvettes to a guy in sweden and i sold an MGA to guy who shipped it overseas.....in all the transactions i got the money up front, the title was not transferred until the cash was deposited and it took 1-2 weeks for the buyer to arrange for the shipping containers and the flatbed to the port. its not like like this is a transaction that happens fast. In both situations i had the car, the title and the cash for along time before they picked it up.....all they had was my bill of sale. you can speak with your bank to find out the easiset and safest way for them to send you money with no risk to you. there is no reason not to sell it to someone overseas just use the normal due diligence in the money transaction.

I bought a 34 coupe out of CA after I called the guy.I then transferred the funds into his account and only when the funds had cleared did I make any arrangements for the shippers to go in and collect it. Gotta admit it is a tense time for all concerned and I for one certainly wouldn't let the car go until paid in full but as you can imagine until the car gets picked up it is a bit nerve racking...

I would think the use of a title company would be a good addition to long distance transactions. When I was in the real estate business, we used title companies as the middle man to handle the transfer of titles and money. That was the reason for their existance, to insure a trouble free transfer of title and money and to make everything legal. I have never heard of using a title company for cars, but I don't know why not. It seems like a good idea to me. IMHO

If this is Australia as corrected, I would check to see who he is going to use to get the car into country. The OzRodders Forum may help you in that regard, I know they have a link or 2 to their popular companies to help ship stuff into Australia.

Regardless of country, here is the method I would use.

As suggested get payment established. I bought 2 cars from Argentia, and the way that worked was I deposited half of the cost including the container, shipping company charges in the proper bank account. When the car was on the water, I sent the remainder. I worked with a company on my end to get it through customs and things were pretty good.

If the guy wants it that bad, he should not have a problem with a grace period for the check to clear. Otherwise he can come and pay cash

Australia? Austria? Too funny.

Check out escrow .com

Amazing how folks want the OTHER guy to take the risks and worry ... "i had the car, the title and the cash for along time before they picked it up.."

I think that the buyer is the one taking all the risks....he cannot remove money from your account, and you have the car,his money and the paperwork.I bought a 32 roadster out of New England and it was quite worrying as his bank did not accept bank transfers from overseas, so I had to use a New York bank to relay the money to his account...for an ordinary working stiff like myself, it was a bit stressful sending my life savings overseas like that...but the seller was a nice guy and we had a few phone calls so I could try and judge who I was dealing with...

good luck with the sale..`
