Hi Guys: I just bought a B7A 6882 -An Oil canister & filter adapter from Macs for my 272Y block. The engine already has an adapter on it but it is distorted and leaks. So we get the car up in the air pull off the old one and go to install the new one and guess what? Yup it is the wrong one even though Macs says it is in there book and website. I have heard some stories about Macs in the past but just brushed them off until now and it happened to me. Anyway I read a thread on here at one time on how to repair one with a large socket and a hammer and flat surface. Can anyone provide me the link? Or does anyone know of where to get a made in the usa real deal???

I dont remember where the link was either. That said, hold the part up and look at the edge. You want the part that fits in the block to have a 1/8 inch press fit against the gasket. Use a chunk of tube or pipe sawed straight, and a block of wood and a BFH. To get the correct gasket, you may have to buy an oil filter element for a canister type on a 54 early 55. I'll bet the tractor parts are the same.

The link being referred to is from the late Walt Knuckles, FYI. I used the technique once. It calls for a starter or generator shell in the process. Just happened to have one at the time. It worked, though was caveman like.
There is a guy on ebay now selling a nice, sturdy, machined adapter. It is pricey, around 95.00. Ted Eaton has had contact with the guy, and the price is little over the machining cost. After going through Walt's method, the 95.00 may seem less expensive.

I have used Walts method,(he was still alive at the time) Found something don't remember what I used for the outer diameter but I had a press and a socket for the center. Car shot out a pint of oil on start up, Walt was quick with the solution. He was sure an other nice Y blocker.

I put a Mac's adapter on my 312 recently and I'm very happy with it. It seems to be sturdier than another one I bought at a well known TBird store, which leaked.
Mac's also has an extra thick gasket for it. Unfortunately, it is extra and not included with the adapter. The only criticism I have about the unit is the location of the "TOP". It should be located above the cutout and for some one who doesn't know that they can install it wrong. Apparantly the "TOP" doesn't mean top. it means outside. I wrote them about it and got a nice reply from them. You can get better results with honey than with vinegar, to paraphrase an old adage. |
