I loaned a Zenith to a bud two months ago. He did not run the car much but left the carb full of gas. Today we removed the carb and put his original back on. My carb has a goodly layer of rust in the bowl. His gas is old. Do I guess it is the alcohol in this bad gas absorbing water and rusting the carb? Rust is loose to the finger touch. (I had rebuilt his carb and when we installed it, the car fired right up and ran on the stale gas but what a nastly exhaust smell.)

I would think the rust came from his tank. Just rinse it out good, maybe a small wire brush and you should be good to go. Blow out the jets, and it will run just fine.

I agree with fordfixer. It would take alot of water to make that much rust.

Mike V,
I've looked at the cab this morning. Some rust is loose but some is on the carb bowl wlls. The brass is very dull and black in some places. Some kind of chem action was going on. Now to quantify this, the carb is a spare of mine. I did not open it prior to installing it on my Bud's car. It have been rolling around in my rumbleseat area in a zip lock bag for years. Thus the situation is not pure. Clem |

I like to oil or grease spare parts for long term storage. I have noticed lately that the distributor caps in my basement have a light coat of mold, and I'm not sure what would work best for that.

The car has a magnet in the gas tank near the outlet. I'm trying to blame E10, but I'm not sure.
