Default Assembling a starter

Hey Guys. When reassembling a starter or generator, what's the best way to hold the four brushes back so the armature can be installed in the base plate?

On a starter, cock the springs back so they rest on the brush holders, put in the brushes and the armature, and then release the springs. I can't remember the last time I did a generator, but I think it's the same.

I had this issue recently on an 8N tractor starter. I could not rest the springs back where they would stay. I ended up putting it together with the brushes out and the pulling the springs back with a pick one at a time and putting the brushes in that way.

There are You-tube videos on 9N/2N/8N tractor starters. Technique is the same.

Just take the springs out, assemble the starter, and replace the springs. Easy Peasy! Why make this so damned hard?!!!

I've pulled the brushes back and used a pin/nail and a zip-tie to hold them so I could easily slip the armature in. Not too difficult and you can setup everything before you attempt to put the rear plate on.
