On a much less important curiosity though........... Is the 'A' in MAFFI supposed to be pronounced phonetically as a 'hard A' (-as Paul pronounced it in the video) -or a 'soft A' (-how Jarrod pronounced it)? As you can tell, there ain't much worth watching on TV this evening!!

Depends on where you're from P.S.! Up north they may be Model Ahhh's, a little more southern may get you an Aww.

Big congratulations to Andrew Oliver .....the lucky winner of the Phaeton. In reply to Brent's comment, to be grammatically correct, you should look at the Double Consonant rule in the English language (sorry I'm going to wander OT a little). In the word "MAFFI", the letter "A" is followed by a double consonant and thus the "A" should be short (pronounced as "ah"). For example, in the word “kitten,” the double “t” indicates that the “i” sound is short....or as in the word "hopping" (what a bunny rabbit does) the "o" is short. On the flip side of that, if the vowel is followed by only one consonant, then the vowel is usually hard (pronounced as if you just said the name of the vowel in the alphabet). ....like in the word "hoping" (you want something to happen). As another example of both situations, note the letter "i" in the word "winner" (a person who wins) versus "whiner" (a person who complains a lot). So to be grammatically correct in the word "MAFFI" the "A" should be pronounced as a soft "A" - "M-ah-f-ee". Jarrod uses the grammatically correct pronunciation. The same applies for the word "MAFCA" where the first "A" is followed by two consonants and thus should be a soft "A", pronounced "M-ah-f-k-ah". ....my $0.02, Brad in Maryland PS: My second grade grammar teacher (Miss Grebe - RIP) would be so proud that I actually paid attention in her class !. Actually (according to my English Grammar teacher - Miss Hudson) the correct designations in this situation are either SHORT or LONG vowel pronunciation, not either HARD or SOFT which are designated usage in a different circumstance I believe. ![]()

What I learned is that English rules are broken a lot and that makes it tough for anyone to learn it as an adult. George Bernard Shaw spelled fish "ghoti"
gh as in rough o as in women ti as in action |

Since it is an acronym, not a word, the English rules do not apply. It is customary to pronounce the sounds of an acronym by the sound each letter represents when saying each word separately.
With that said- I'm a self-diagnosed idiot, and I play one on TV also!! |
