Greg, I'd just sent you a private message.
By the way, welcome to the Barn

There is only 1 way to correctly fix this and that is to replace both axles with ones that are either new or used ones that have passed aircraft quality crack detection. By bending the end back, you are betting that you won't lose 1 or both rear wheels while driving because if you lose the threads and nut, you will lose the brake drum and wheel/tire combo.

If you are going to try and straighten them, at least add those clips that bolt on to the backing plates to keep the wheel in place in case of a broken axle. (I'd prefer "Safety Hubs" if I knew where to get them.) https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Early...xoCbncQAvD_BwE.
If they survive a re-torquing and you have these, you might be OK. |

Axles will be replaced.
Back when I was a kid, Corncrib mechanics was all we knew. Growing up in farm country we had more time and tools than we had money and knowledge. Surprised we survived. |

Make sure you have the original 41 rear . One of my 41s had a 46-48 rear in it , which takes different axles . The 41 is easy to distinguish, it has 2 holes where the spring shackle goes .

Having lost the rear wheel off our '65 Mustang on the Golden Gate Bridge many years ago at speed (during rush hour) I can assure you it is a very scary and unpleasant experience. Replace the axles.

Wherever he’s at, I know for a fact that you have at least as many in your own state of Wisconsin!

French Lake has always been a great place for old car parts, Windy Hill
was fairly well picked over for early Ford parts the last time I was there. Rohners Auto Parts, 800-622-0290, is one of the largest salvage yards in sw. MN., and is about 7 miles north of Willmar, MN. They still have quite a few Old cars in the yard, but may be picked over for Old Ford parts, call them at 320-235-4602. .

Greg, I have mint axles, and I am betting that Fred at Southside Obsolete (MN.) may very well have NOS.

I emailed Fred, he said he'd check. I'll keep you in mind for the axles. Going to check on something on Thursday. Might be hauling home an entire car if everything looks good. |
