I am looking for an electric gas gauge for 1935 pickup. I have a Bob Drake tank & electric sending unit I want to make work together.
I would like to buy a tested working gauge if possible. Thanks Last edited by Jeep09; 05-27-2025 at 08:40 AM. |

Not sure about the Pickup's but I put a 36 gauge in my 35 cabriolet with a sending unit from Tanks and it works great. The 36 gauge was a perfect fit.

First, make sure you know exactly what you have. Just about all replacement tanks we know about come with resistance type sending units that are incompatible with the original Ford gauges, that work by the King-Seeley principle. Some folks say they have been able to get them working together for some effect, but I've never seen it. Why the incompatibility you ask? It's probably because the replacement tanks are intended for the Street Rod market that uses the aftermarket gauges.

First do you have the deluxe dual gauges or the single standard one? The electric gauge is hard to find for either application. None currently on Ebay Southside Obsolete in MN might have one. Here is a pic of the electric unit for the dual gauge.

The 35 and 36 deluxe gauges are very similar, both use the same bezel and fit in the same size opening. The 35 deluxe gauge is oil/fuel. The fuel side of the gauge is the hydrostatic version. The 36 deluxe dual gauge is also oil/fuel however the 36 version employs an electric sending unit and corresponding electric gauge head.
When Planojc stated, in part, ' I put a 36 gauge in my 35 cabriolet with a sending unit from Tanks and it works great. The 36 gauge was a perfect fit. This makes sense, he hooked the Tanks sending unit to an original 36 electric gauge head. |

Do you have any invoice or paperwork that tells you exactly what sending unit Tanks sold you? |

I did the change about 20 plus years ago so I don't remember what type of sending unit Tanks supplied me. The only issue I have is that with a full tank the needle reads above the full mark but from there it's accurate. The main thing is when it reads E, you better start looking for a gas station.

I was at West Coast Swap meet on Friday. I found a 1936 electric fuel gauge. I am going to see if that will work with my Bob Drake tank & electric sender.

I found a 1936 electric gauge, what is a safe way of testing it?

Hello Newc. I’m restoring a 36 ford cabriolet. I’m looking for some parts. I may be interested in that fuel tank with f/p and sending unit. I need the hood catch latches. I need headlight reflector clips. Looking for scuff plates and windshield frame also. Thanks for any help.
