I'm starting to think that there is a transformation going on from trouble-shooting problems and trying to fix them to keeping beaters running.

Probably not a proper trend for this forum.

Point taken. However the OP did say he was not interested in an engine rebuild that would fix the problem. So in this case it was how to keep my beater running and tolerate it.

I've had good luck with Marvel Mystery Oil in my "yardart" Model A that hadn't run in 30+ years, reduced the smoking by 90%. It still knocks real bad but that's OK, it isn't going anywhere.

So I've been running her with some MMO in the gas. Running pretty good now. I ended up sealing up some spots in the heating system and firewall that were the biggest culprits of fumes entering the cabin. Seems to have helped tremendously. She's still tired, but running pretty good now! Drive on!

I tend to agree with tubman about where this is going, but my 1st 8BA had the same issue. After putting some miles on it, I put Shell Rotella in it which really slowed oil consumption. Just say'n.

Very respectfully, what is the issue with keeping an old car road worthy on a tight budget? I can see if someone was doing something unsafe. In my instance, I know the engine is worn (low compression) and needs rings and a valve job at the least. I'll only put a few hundred miles a year on it. One day, when family obligations aren't at the forefront, I may rebuild the 8ba.

Running thicker oil to reduce consumption and sealing up the firewall to prevent fume entry into the cabin seem like excellent ways to keep the car out there on the road until a rebuild is warranted. She's running much better for the time being and is out on the road making onlookers smile!

Keep letting the newer generation see the old ones ( not us , the cars ) . Keep driving and enjoy every mile .

I found this addition to my '53 8BA worked wonders.

1949-53 Ford Flathead PCV Valve Conversion

This kit allows the installation of a PCV valve on your 1949-53 Ford Passenger Car Flathead Engine. This valve replaces the original vent tube and connects into the factory wiper vacuum hose. Eliminates smoke blow by and helps keep condensation out of the crank case...

When i was younger, my Dad had a 51 Merc , that had Blow-by real bad. i got a newer breather that has a point to conect a hose to it , that would orignaly go to the air cleaner. i put a pieace of heater hose on it and fed the hose out by the master cylinder, that helped some

There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. When you're short of cash you do what you have to do. Not all of us have large amounts of elective spending. Keep smokin'!

I was thrilled at how the cabin air quality improved by plugging a couple abandoned holes in the firewall in mine.
