Began to remove my old trusty engine in the 35 so I can install yet another. The 35 is the test mule for almost every every engine I build. Easier by far to work on the 35 than the 39 coupe. The engine going into the 35 is the 255 cu in 21 stud I built up a few years ago that was not a good engine, all sorts of dramas with the scat stroker crank etc. This is the next rendition of that engine, I invested a lot of money into building it, and was very disappointed with the outcome. I posted numerous grumbles on here about it at the time, so a while back I rebuilt it with nos low compression cast iron heads and a stock distributor. The first time round it always detonated, it had 165 lbs compression and a crab distributor. I feel it had too much compression/too much advance. So, because I'm such a masochist, I'll go through the whole rigmarole yet again. And then, no doubt again when I refit old trusty once I again get disillusioned with the 255....

So what is that photo of Brian, the one going in or the one coming out?
Ah ha! don't need to answer, no cast iron heads so I assume it is the one coming out. Is that a Lucas distributor? Merry Xmas and a happy new year. Geoff |

Very observant of you Geoff, yes, it's the engine coming out, and yes. that's a Lucas 4 lobe distributor...Lenny Jones always raved about them, just one of the many modifications from stock in/on that engine....you've seen it in action at Meremere nostalgia drags years ago when I ran 17 seconds and lost because I broke out of my nominated time....Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too, hopefully we'll have a catchup sometime during the new year, cheers, BB
ps, did you notice I pinched my wifes black stockings? I use them as an additional filtration device on the stock aircleaners.

Yes I remember that weekend, seeing a full bodied, just a bit away from stock, 221 cubic inch, 1935 ford, showing its stuff was really something. I remember another Ford that showed itself well was Malcolm Blakely RIP in his 1951 Ford Sedan that managed 18.1 seconds from a basically stock (carbs and heads) engine. I remember Model A's cranking out 22 and 24 second times that weekend. Everyone was proud of what they achieved and so they should have been. I fear that that weekend was the last of those times. None I have attended since have been the same. Geoff |

yeah, I've never been back; drag racing sucks!! That race where I broke out, I was up against my mates 39 Mercury [I built his engine]. He had like a 4 second lead on me, I caught up to him and actually braked in order I could give him the finger as we crossed the line together, and he won!! Now, dirt track is where that old 35 excels, much more fun and a bit of skill is involved too, bit harder than driving a straight line...
and no, my wife doesn't wear black stockings, I get them off her!

Received V8 times today, lots of reading there. But adjusting and bleeding brakes took precedence. Got a bit of pedal, started her up and ran it in high gear for a few minutes (on jack stands) and will adjust rears some more.

Put seats back in my '41, good thing I had wife's help with the back of the rear seat, it is a bugger to reinstall. Enlisted neighbor to help put front seat back in. He is a strong dude but said "this thing is heavy!" Yup!
Then went on a 5 mile ride. Steers nice, rode great, better than I expected. Almost like a new car! But the brakes need more adjusting, maybe bleeding, especially since brake light switch is stuck, NAPA says they have one. Overall I am super happy with the car. TomC750

Finished adjusting brakes, work well now. Car drives like a new one save for a bit low on power, but rides as well as our Bronco Sport. Suspect timing may be retarded. Will send dist and coil to Charlie. Drained trans and rear. Will refill tomorrow, yes, GL4 for trans, GL5 for rear.

Filled trans and rear. Used a furnace oil burner pump I rigged up years ago to do such a job. A bit slow pumping gear oil, especially the 140 for the transmission. Put the oil jug in front of a heater which helped quite a bit.

I just finished restoring another '34 - '37 flathead V8 generator. These are more difficult than most to restore, but they are very nice generators.
Next up is a '53 two-brush, a '34 three-brush and a really rare '32 three-brush post mount V8 generator. |

38 Ford Flathead "old school hot rod"..working on issues, and need help. The car arrived with negative ground. I want to change it back to positive, 6V ground (reverse the battery to being correct for the car when produced. It starts, runs, on the negative ground, but I don't think the seller had the generator, which has the attached fan on it..a 59A in the car ..that it was polarized to negative. I know the POS goes to a good ground. The NEG goes to the solenoid, etc..I think the coil should be a non-resister coil, as the resistor is under the dash. So I wire the negative wire to the PLUS on the coil? negative on down to the distributor and points? That's what I'm working on today. I have studied everything I can find on it, the Youtube etc, but nobody really shows what goes "Where"..except for the diagrams for a 38 Ford. Of course the generator is for the 59 A.. and when I run it to dial in the 97 carbs, when I shut her down, the battery shows a discharge, telling me I don't think it is functioning and wrongly polarized...can't wrap my mind around it and help would greatly>> be appreciated.

OldFred, your coil is wrong way around, because your car is pos ground, the wire from coil to distributor [which then goes to ground] should be from the + side of coil. The points in the cutout in the regulator could possibly be [welded] or otherwise stuck together. Or you've got a short somewhere. Welcome to the best flathead site on the planet!
