2 spare wheels

Thinking of carrying two spare wheels/tires on the back of my '29 roadster on the normal carrier. But I wonder if the unit is strong enough or does it need to be reinforced ? Bill

Can't answer your question but why not just carry an extra tube and switch it out when the need arises?

The carrier itself is strong enough, the mounting of it will probably need to be beefed up.

I have the three studs to do that with.They are just hex stock,with one end turned and threaded for lug nuts,and the other drilled and threaded to go on the studs on the carrier.They are in one of my totes with other parts,so I can't lay my hands on them right now.I never used them,they were in a box of parts I bought at the Amherst flea market 20 or 25 years ago.The seller did a lot of liquidation of A collections,they could have had 5 owners before me.If used in conjunction with some kind of support under the tire,they might be OK.But,used alone they have that rear wheel cantilevered out so far to clear the hubcap of the inner wheel it is scary.

The classic "Grapes of Wrath" approach would be the one spare wheel and tire and another tire leather strapped to the first. Route 66 here we come!

many touring cars of the teens and 20s had the double wheels on the back- so def can be done. Roads were so rough that frequent blowouts were common.

Demountable rim cars (later Model Ts) usually carried double rims w/tires or just spare tires & tubes - double wheels w/tires would be quite hefty IMO.

I have a "Duplex" spare carrier that attaches an extra rim/tire onto the existing mounted rim - not sure it would suffice to hold a mounted wheel & tire - photo later.

Is this for everyday use, or just for touring? Two wheels might be a little much for where the bracket attaches to the car, and over time you'd likely develop stress cracks or other deformation. You could reinforce that area if you want something that will be on the car all the time. If you just need the extra spare for long trips, I'd probably try to think of something that didn't require permanently modifying the car.

The double spare tires has been done for years. My dad and a couple club guys did this back in the 70's. As I recall, they just used some stainless hex stock and threaded both ends. Then some short studs screwed into the lug nuts. The first spare was slipped onto the carrier, and the hex bars were tightened with a crescent wrench holding that wheel to the carrier. (That was my job as a kid! ) Then the 2nd spare was lifted up by my dad and I screwed in the lug nut studs. I think they look cool on the right vehicle.
