Throttle spring

When I take my foot off the gas pedal the throttle activating lever on my RHD steering column is not fully returning to its correct resting position. That causes a fast idle, which I want to fix. Further inspection shows that the hook at the inner end of the throttle spring is not hooked around the small peg under the throttle activating shaft. When the spring is properly installed, that small hook and the larger one at the other end of the spring, create the tension that returns the foot pedal to its normal resting position (see photo).

So it’s a simple matter of connecting both ends of the spring to their correct positions right? Well, no, actually it’s not a simple matter at all! I have just spent a full hour trying unsuccessfully to do it and am now tearing my hair out. Is there a secret method known only to Ford Barners? Or maybe there is a special tool?

There are 5 different throttle shaft assemblies. Take the assembly off, take a picture,and we can probably help. There are two different springs. The arms on at least two come off to install a spring. On the others you turn the shaft 360 degrees to position the spring. I installed the spring on each style I had off the car.
During removal of a motor the throttle assembly can get damaged, and bent. You bend it back cold.

Does the RHD use a different spring? The parts book shows AF-9737 RHD.

I have the same part number for the spring in my October 1929 NZ parts list (so being an NZ publication it will be RHD).

I was not thinking., your horse is a different color. My response was for left hand steering wheel, or what was used in the states.

this is the RHD throttle return spring off my 29 A - [ new ones like this are available in NZ and UK ... or were a year ago anyway !]

Remove the mounting bracket from the column. Get the spring and pedal on the mount without the bell crank piece. you can pivot the pedal a lot further without the body in the way. Then hold the spring loaded pedal in position and fit the bell crank piece. Then the washer and split pin, then re-mount the assembly onto the column.

Looks like I may have the wrong spring for RHD as John's photo shows a slightly different one, with fewer coils. When I get the correct spring I will use Dave's method of re-attaching it.

That did the trick!!
