Default Speedometer reads in KPH

The speedometer on my 1940 Deluxe reads fast. When I’m going 45 mph, it reads around 70. In fact, if you assume it is reading kilometers per hour, it’s dead-on. This car spent it’s first 80 years in Connecticut, which to my knowledge, has never used the metric system on their roads. I don’t really mind, because it makes me feel like I’m driving fast, but what’s going on here?

Your speedo drive turtle is obviously infected by the 2K bug. (incorrect speedo drive gear in relation to your final drive gear, and or, tire size change from stock?)

Does your odometer work?
If yes, is it accurate?
If the odometer works, and is not accurate, is the speedometer calibrated to itself (if you drive a steady indicated 60 mph, does the odometer show you go exactly one mile in one minute)?

When I was in the Army I had an old 4x4 Carryall that the PO used in Mexico. It had a plate over the original speedo that read in KPH. 80 was straight up on the unit which was 50 MPH. Doubt that is what is with your unit but anything is possible.

Verify the rear end gear ratio, verify the tire diameter, and verify the number on the speedo drive, or turtle, is correct for all the first checks

check behind the speedo there could be a ratio box fitted [when we change here you could buy them everywhere easy to fit unscrew the cable from the speedo fit the unit to the speedo and attach the cable] took about 5 minutes to do

Thats really interesting what some one did on mine was to print out a whole new matching speedo face plate with the graduations being metric -Looks like it belongs there -The odometer is of course still in miles.
