1938 woody muffler

Looking to see if anyone knows where I could get a muffler for my 38 woody without breaking the bank? I think the 400 dollars that ecklers wants is a little steep.

If you want concourse correct, well, that comes with a cost. I'd recently sold a used (correct) muffler for $300. So, methinks $400 isn't too bad for new as long as it's correct. I'm quite leery of Ecklers (Macs).

I would get a photo from Ecklers of the muffler and ask if it's in stock or not. If it's not in stock you may wait a long time!

Any good exhaust shop could hook you up with a muffler. JMO

Does the woody have a special muffler? I just bought a 38 convertible and it came with what looks to be a stock exhaust system that I'm not planning on using. I can send pics if you are interested

I have a complete sock system for $50 . ran for maybe 1/2hr then duals installed. Newc in Oregon.

Here is a photograph of a stock muffler for a '39 / '40. Same basic appearance of a '38 but possibly differing inlet / outlet orientation.

I'm pretty sure that's what the one that came with the car looks like. I'll look at it later tonight when I get home. Should it have a part number or ford script?

No part number but yes, the Ford script on one end.

Once in a while the originals do turn up in the remnants of their original service part boxes. Mike, please correct me if wrong, but doesn't the original muffler have a 48 part number prefix ('35 model year) with the inlet at 6 o'clock when viewed from the rear and a 10 o'clock outlet?


P.S. For those of you who missed Hershey this year, count your blessings. The near-non-stop rain and cold temperatures so far have been a bummer.

David, you are (no surprise) correct in that the prefix for the '38 muffler is 48. For '39 / '40, as I'd depicted in my previous post, the prefix is 91a.
I'll go back and edit that post to avoid confusion as to the orientation of the inlet / outlet. It (the photo) should still be of some aid to those searching for a proper muffler.

PT# for 35 to 38 muffler is 48-5230, 39 to 40 91A-5230.

I have this "Ford Script" muffler BUT I find NO part # stamped on it? I thought that the "other" determinate of the difference in "Ford" muffler's was the Over All Length??

Of course, length and inlet / outlet location determine application.
Later, service parts were often shorter than the factory installed part and utilized adapters.

SO....I am assuming the one in my picture is a 35-38 even though in the first picture I have the inlet and outlet reversed per DavidG's 10 & 6 locations. AT least in my mind IF I move them in the correct location I think it makes the outlet 10 and the inlet 6????


AND do you have a picture you could share of the 91A muffler by chance close at hand??2 AS I need 2 of those.

Just a note, when talking about orientation, ie 6 oclock, 10 oclock, you need to say viewed from which end, and with "X_ray" eyes or from looking at each end. Could be confusing.

Reminds me of a High School physics test that asked "why does a mirror reverse writing on your shirt, left to right, but not up and down?"! Obviously, left and right depend on which way you are looking but up and down doesn't.
