Here's one that I can't understand... A lot of people who should know better insist on calling the diesel engine in their dodge a Cummings. And about half of them call it a 'Cummings Motor.' perhaps these folks were influenced by the works of ee cummings?

I always understood the terms the same as you but I suppose if it works it doesn't matter what it's called.

Actually, a threaded fastener with threads that taper to a point is a screw. A bolt has the same size threads all the way down.

LOL. Cummins diesel is much like Kleenex or Windex. Both are proprietary brands but have become so ubiquitous as to have assumed the catchall term for similar brands. Much like Linoleum flooring which is actually vinyl to include all sheet vinyl from other manufacturers. In terms of a motor or an engine the noun is interchangeable. That helps explain why the State has a DMV as opposed to a DEV. Cummins must have done it right for such high esteem.

As I remember, water pump pliers have curved jaws, channel lock type pliers have straight jaws.

A cap screw has has the same size threads all the way, It becomes a bolt when used with a nut.

8BA heads are held on with cap screws.
If it screws into a threaded hole in a casting it is a cap screw.

If the same fastener is used with a nut it becomes a bolt and nut.
To most mechanics they are all bolts,

Channel lock is a brand name for tongue and groove pliers like Crescent is a brand name for an adjustable wrench.

Anyone refer to the couch as a Chesterfield?
That said steel is iron. It is not cast iron. The difference I believe is the amount of carbon. Now angle iron needs to be spec'd also. What size and thickness, and it can come in stainless steel which also contains iron.
Got this from google. Show it to your engineer.
Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon. It can contain small quantities of silicon, phosphorus, sulfur and oxygen. The carbon content of steel is between 0.08 to 1.5 percent. This makes it harder than wrought iron but not as brittle as cast iron.

What I was referring to was many people's insistance on adding a 'gs' at the end of 'Cummins'. And CAS, I read Clessie Cummins book. It was Excellent.

But when my older son was in college in Seattle, he and 5 friends piled into a Russian kids' 500 dollar oldsmobile cutlass and drove to Mexico for spring brake. A few months later they came to Orcas Island in the olds and I had never seen such bald tires. They didn't have any tread, but there were 'threads' sticking up where the tread should have been. As I made a remark about the tire I ran my hand over the top of the right front, only to find they were the needle sharp, now hook shaped steel belts and of course I was swiping against the grain. Now if it was an old style tire it would have had threads. Cotton, rayon, nylon. Sorry to be a smartass!

Originally "water pump pliers" were so named because they were designed for tightening the packing nut on early water pumps such as the Model A.

Never heard Chesterfield other than cigarettes but I use davenport and couch as synonyms.
