were the original lug nuts on the wheels slightly wider than repros, as it seems to me the wheels always get scratched using the crank tool, which is a sloppy fit.
Do you guys use a regular socket to take wheels off? I once saw a suggestion to wrap foam around the crank tool but in any event, how do you guys avoid marring the spokes and the wheel hub, especially on colored wheels. |

I use a regular socket on a short extension wrapped in duct tape to protect the spokes and attached to a long Craftsman 1/2” ratchet. It also facilitates finishing up with a torque wrench. Yes I know torque wrenches weren’t used at Ford or anywhere else during the Model A period.

A little tape on the bar of a 4- way lug wrench and a rubber bumper cut to fit inside the socket helps to keep it off the hub works well.

I fill my lug wrench, socket, hand crank with newspaper and dip it in rubber handle dip about 5"-6" 3-4 times and let it dry. cut end open with a utility knife but leave the leading edge covered, tadaaaa, no more scratched wheels. I have a star lug wrench so the red handle dip shows which end to use.

I cut off a socket so that it holds the lug nut but is not so deep that it touches the rim. This fits on a 6" extension with a foam sleeve on it. Works for me.

I have a dedicated socket and 6" extension that I covered with heat shrink tubing. I used about 6" and let it cover socket and extension which also holds it together. This protects the inner part of the wheel and also the spokes...

2X with the shrink tubing like TerryO. Since I have chrome lug nuts I also use nut protectors.

Painted wheels need touch ups often, but powder coated wheels do not.
