Default 40 frame color

What was the color of the frame, axles etc.? When sandblasting my frame it looked like a medium gray in some places under the pads. I would normally just use a satin black on axles and mechanical parts and the frame. But maybe the frame was gray. Anyone have some thoughts?
Thanks

Sattin black as far as I've ever seen. I don't think 1940 was any different.

They were "chassis black" which was a semi gloss black.

There was no such thing as "chassis black" in 1940.
The frames were gloss black.
Now, to be clear, Ford surely didn't spend a lot of effort making the frames "pretty". It was more an effort at what we'd nowadays call "corrosion prevention". The paint was applied quickly and no doubt thin - at least I can't believe they were too concerned with aesthetics.

All the folks that claim they were satin or so called 'chassis black' I believe are either repeating a long told "wives tale" or have only witnessed old, faded frames.
Having witnessed numerous extremely well preserved frames and numerous factory assembly line photos, you can rest assured, they (frames) were gloss.

Seth,
Lately I've been using Dupont single stage enamel.
I've had good fortune with the way it lays down.
Kindest regards to ya Sir...
