Long ago in my checkered past, a man who is and was far more successful in life than I, taught me that volume is the secret to a successful business. Not high prices. being a "last penny merchant" is fine for the ego, but "Flogging" an item for it's last penny of price is not a winner's formula for success. "Ya made the first sale, now can you make the second to that guy?" Can you count on him as a repeat customer who will increase your volume? Or is it a one time thing? Did the buyer, buy because he thought you gave him a fair price, or is he going to see the same item for less some where else and resent you holding him up for it? I'm now on S.S. and haven't got a huge amount of money to play with so price/quality is a consideration.
Mercifully, My rant is done!

I "think" that BTT means Bump To Top. The original message get buried way down in all the other ads so when the originator types BTT it rises back to the top.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a single reaction printed to Jalopy31's reply, it's golden. I hope folks understand that and know why it's not in your best interest to post phone, email, and worst of all address info in a public listed ad. Even with caution I got a C/L ad reply this morning that was fishing for a date (or probably something worse). We probably all would like to hope that we could trust a fellow enthusiast on a site such as this, but the web is like the town square of old and anything posted on the wall is seen by anyone passing by. With the web some of those going by are thieves, or deviants of another sort.

I've had some of the same experiences you guys have with flakey "buyers/sellers" here. Yeah, it's frustrating, but if any of you have been at this for any length of time you've had the same experience with classified ads in the newspaper or even at swap meets. How many times have you had a long discussion with some yokel on the phone, described all you reasonably thought was important, answered some silly questions, and then gave directions to your house after asked and then never saw the person? Or if they showed up, all that happened was some bruising of the tires? Or at the swap some guy stands, blocking your booth, fingering a bunch of stuff, interupting with "how much?), and then just walking away. Why would we expect this newer form of advertising/selling would change human behavior? No, I don't like it or defend it, just recognize people are people and do whatever I can to minimize my contact with that type while appealing to the legit ones.

Any responce to a message brings it back to the top of the list on this format, so some just type BTT, which stands for back to top.

Or they "bump" it back to the top of the list.

BTTT means Back To The Top. When an ad get down several pages, a seller can bring it Back To The Top by making any kind of responce to the ad.

I must be living right. I've sold a lot of parts on the Barn in the last year, with and without a phone number, and haven't had any problems with anybody. Once in a while a guy forgets to send me the money, I e-mail and he remembers. No disrespect but sometimes you have more than one or two deals going at once and us older guys are not good multitaskers! Also I have never had a scammer yet! I guess most of them don't have use for the stuff I sell!
The other thing is if you want to sell you will soon find out there are buyers for everything as long as you are reasonable, but if you want the top price for everything it just takes longer to find the buyer.
Since most of us don't have 50 years to wait it might be a good idea to sell a little cheaper and let someone else wait the 50 years!
Best regards to all,
Tony

Well you do have to watch out for scammers and deadbeats, but some folks are truly just weird. Over on the HAMB, a fellow wanted a Dale Klee NAPA calender-said he'd pay postage, usually got one from the website, etc, etc. I wrote to him, said I had an extra, no need for postage, just send me his address. Guess what-no answer. Maybe he didn't really want it? Still could have just dropped me a line.

i work outside long hours. limited internet on weekends. Sometimes i ask about parts and then cant respond for a week or so. some sellers themselves can get rude when they dont get a response quick enough (GERARD). Forget your precious parts.

When anybody types anything in a thread it goes to the top of the forum, so when you open the forum it will appear on the first page or so. If no one types anything newer stuff pushes the thread further and further down. So the originator will sometimes type "bump" so the post will bump to the top again. Or Back To The Top, (bttt).

Thanks for mostly support here folks. BTW, bttt and Bump mean "back to the top" and "bump" to the top as I understand. I wasn't really having a bad day generally just with responding to Ford Barners "wanted's". One has since responded and I appreciate that. However, I was offering responses to hard-to-get items at "fair" (as I saw it) prices. I had lots of time on my hands for the computer since the weather was just awful!!

I do think I will just hibernate from the "wanted's" for awhile. Some of the stuff for A400, 68C, Vics is just plain hard to find!! If one needs it, I guess I'll just let them find me!!

Have a great day and I do appreciate this site!!!!

Hello ken,
I'm doing great for a guy that just became un-employed for the third time in three years! How are you doing?
I was being honest, for the short time I've been here, everyone has been great, but I have been playing with old cars for over 40 years, and for the most part the old car guys are a great bunch!
The best to you!
Tony

So, maybe, if you advised the seller of your situation from the onset, they could be more understanding and helpful in completing your deal. In this day and age, we expect that if you didn't reply immediately, you weren't interested.

I have sometimes not responded to people when they answer my want ads, mostly because they are so high in price that I don't want to insult them. It seems that when I put up a wanted ad, more than half of the responses I get are from guys that just think they struck gold because somebody wants their parts. I was sent a picture of some hub caps from a 35 ford that were somewhat beat up and the guy wanted 135.00 for them. C'mon, real world prices please. I must say though that in the last two weeks, I have found almost everything I have asked for from Barners and at real honest prices.

I have bought and sold a number of car parts and antique toys on Craigslist, and wanted to offer another perspective on posting phone numbers there.

Keep in mind that you can enter a person's home phone number (cell numbers are a different matter) into Google and you will likely get their name, address, city, etc. From that info, you can get a Google map to their house and even pull up a Google satellite image of their property. These satellite images are amazingly crisp when you zoom in on a property.

People who are targeting cars or parts to steal could easily use this information to map a path directly to your house and pretty much know the lay of the land without ever having been there before.

I personally never put my phone number in the ad since I know the consequences of entering my home number and my cell phone is provided by my employer.

I do screen email replies to my ads and choose not to respond to some that seem questionable. This week, I had someone trying to scam me out of an antique pedal car that I have listed for sale. If someone cannot take the time to type me a well-worded, legible email expressing a sincere interest in the specific item I have posted, I will delete their email without replying. An email asking "Do u still have this item for sale?" gets deleted. An email asking "Do you still have the Garton pedal car for sale? I live in the Greensboro area and would be interested in seeing it." would get a reply.

Just my $.02 worth.

Todd

By the way, I have had the same issues with replying to Parts Wanted and Parts For Sale ads on the forum - seldom get a reply. It would be nice if people would reply with a simple message stating "I found one." or "The item you asked about is sold."
This is exactly how I see it as well and pretty much respond the same way. Posting phone numbers on line can be asking for some really big problems.

Tom
