Default v8 60 block

Still looking for a V8 60 block for my 1933 PODH class hydroplane. I was cautioned to stay away from the early (1937?) blocks because of the "tin sides."
However, with the great gasket products we have now, is leaking still a problem?
Polished, it seems they would be attractive. Are there other issues with them?

They were OK when new but the deterioration has had a long time to play with the dissimilar metals. The corrosion resistant steel was welded to the cast iron utilizing a special process so repairs would be difficult at best if a leak does get started. If it is ever run in a salt water environment, it would deteriorate even more quickly. The blocks in the 1940 time frame had some definite improvements over the early ones.

I did not realize they were welded in. I thought they were attached similar to a crankcase.
I think I will stick with the 38-39. Thanks

Hi; I sold all my V8 6o stuff to Canadian hydro racers, but in the Portland Or area we deal with Jack Corley a member of RG 10. He specializes in V8 60 items. I understand that the 39/40 were solid side blocks, with the 40 having larger bearings, different oil pan and different block venting. Newc

I have had 2 'tin-side' V8-60's and never had a problem with leaks. Not much salt water in Minnesota, though.

I have a motor that came out of a boat. It has stainless steel exhaust on it.
The motor had the plugs out of two cylinder and got water in it so it's stuck.
It is a 1937 motor, so if you get desperate let me know. I am in Sonoma Ca. So not too far away.

As I recall, from reading about the 60hp engines in the EFV8C/A's 37 Book and in Rich Willims book on the "Little 60 Power House", the '37 tin side engine came early in 37. The cast side engines from later in '37 to '39 were basically the same. The cast side '40 engine stood alone with its different crankshaft and bearing sizes.
Finding just a block may be more difficult than finding and buying a complete engine.

Are you looking for just a block or a complete engine?

Just a block. Mine has good internals, but a crack in the valley at a valve guide. Joe Boghosian of Fresno says it can't be welded. All Ford in your town has three for me to look at. Happy to hear of any other leads though. Will
be heading to San Jose in a few days.
