Default rear wheels lock down

As i left my driveway going about 20 mph both rear wheels locked down sliding to a stop. i put it in reverse and backed up, it moved foward a little then locked again . i keep working with it until i got it back to the house, as i moved forward it felt like it was grabbing ,i jacked it up took the rear wheels of started the car its sounds like it is in the rear end makes a bumping noise. this car has the manual borg warner over drive.it was not being used when this happen. any suggestion.

Not sure I understand what you mean. How can it happen if it's not being used?

Have you removed the brake drums to see if the emergency lining is grabbing and locking up the rear end. That's what happened to my 29 Tudor when it acted just like your's.

The over drive was not being used when the wheels locked down. i had just started down the rd. hope this help you understand. i did take the drums off all looked ok, started the car put it in gear with drums off the axle turned fine still made a bumping noise.

The bumping noise sounds like a broken ring or pinion gear. I had a broken tooth on my ring gear that I wasn't aware of and the loose tooth was picked up in the gear oil and jammed between the ring and pinion. I sure heard a clunk, clunk, clunk after that as it took out a couple more teeth. Had to replace the ring and pinion.

I think Barry is right, pull out your fill & drain plugs on the rear end take a small magnut put in the drain hole and see if any parts come out also you can take a flash light and look in the fill hole at your ring gear but you cann`t see the pinion.
