29 Sport Coupe wood

My Sport Coupe had no wood or hardware when I got it so I have some questions now that it is time to fit the new wood.
- Are the three bolts that attach the door header wood to the metal door header strip carriage bolts?
- Does the nailed on door header trim go between the door header wood and the metal header strip or under the metal header strip?
- Does the package shelf fit under the body or between the belt wood and the body?
- What bolts are used to bolt the belt wood to the body, carriage, countersunk machine? Do the bolt heads go from the top down or bottom up?
- Do I attach the header first and then nail on the header trim or nail the trim on first and then install the header?

I can't help you BUT I believe there's a cabriolet site with pictures, also Marco's site may have something. Others will chime in I'm sure.

Hi Randy: I've got a 28 Sport Coupe which I think is almost the same. I fit the side rails together first and then put the hardware to them. The side rails go in with the three carriage bolts. The parcel shelf goes between the metal and the wooden rail across the back of the body. (If I've got it right.) I've had quite the job as my car had no wood or hardware in it when I got it. Here's a couple of pictures that may help. As you can see I need the covers that go over the "B" pillars.

Here are some pictures of a 28/29 Sport Coupe body that I took at Bert's in Denver back in 2008/2009. Doesn't show you the specific details you are asking about but may be of some help. Sure was a nice body.

Somewhere in my archives I took a lot of detailed photos of a 28 Sport Coupe body before I took it apart for restoration. It was in tough shape but I paid attention to what fasteners went where. If that might interest you perhaps I could mail you a CD with a zillion images on it-just give me time to find it as I moved recently and Lord knows where they are stored. Send me a PM with mailing address and I will eventually get around to mailing you a CD. Might as well put them to good use.

The answer to your first question is yes, three small carriage bolts. Obviously the carriage bolt heads were in the door opening, i.e. pointed down. The nuts used were the special conical nuts and the wood was countersunk such that the nuts were flush with the wood.

As to the package shelf, if memory serves me right the rear of the tray bolts to the bottom of the body panel. So you have a "sandwich" that goes, top to bottom, wood, body panel, then package tray. And I am sure these used hex head bolts but with the same countersunk conical nuts (nuts up in the railing wood).

I have one vote for the package tray under the body and one vote for betwwen the body and the wood.

Thanks for the Pictures guys, There's some details there I can use on my 28. Like the "B" pillar covers. I should be able to make them from the pictures.
