Restoring the Dis. braker plate and Stop light switch...

Besides buying a new Distributor Breaker Plate and Stop light switch, does any of the vendors sell just the fiber insulation plate and five (5) rivets for the breaker plate and just the guts of the stop light switch?

I suppose I cold get a repro stop light switch and put the guts of the switch within the original.

AND by the way...just how does one tell an original Stoplight Switch from an older used repro?

I don't know if any vendors sell the phenolic insulator piece for the upper distributor plate but you can buy the stuff by the sheet from McMaster-Carr if you're enthusiastic enough to cut out your own, and the rivets shouldn't be any problem to find either. Having said that, I'm reasonably certain that they can be replated without any damage to the original insulator.

I have cad plated hundreds with the insulators on them and they are not harmed during the plating process. No replacement parts made for any stop switches or dist plates.

The 28-29 stop light s/w didn't have the 2 stiffener ribs, as the common repops do.

Original 30-31 stop light switches Ive seen had a bushing on the ends of the hsg for the plunger to ride on.The repops have no bushings at all.A lot of the repops will short out & have to be taken apart & repaired-obviously no quality control.

The stop light switches that A&L sell do have bushings and they work great.

What parts do you need? I used parts from two original swtiches to make one good one. In this case my spring was broken.

about some of the S/W's were marked?

Who made the S/W's?

I don't pay enough attention to repros to know the differences in this case except they are typically modern blueish zinc plated and likely much thinner metal. Also repros commonly fail.

I've never seen one with markings but I don't do enough '28-29 stuff. If one did it would likely be a very small logo from either AutoLite (AL) or the typical round Bosch logo.

Era aftermarket switches I've seen were excellent. I have one I'd use on a show car but would have to remove a small decal first. It was given to me because the decal (what's left of it) says "Marco Mfg."!

I also have an NOS MARCO brake switch for a 1932. I don't ever remember seeing any markings on original 28-9 brake switches.
