Does anyone know of a good old school mechanic in Central Louisiana around the Alexandria, Pineville area. I am having what I believe is clutch trouble. I had it worked on but it is still not right. I need somebody that can tell me what's wrong and what it will take to make it right. Thanks

Looks like I may have to do it myself.
The transmission has to come out and hopefully I can figure out what's wrong. Bad shudder when taking off and downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. Had a new pressure plate, clutch disk and throwout bearing put in. Same trouble as before. I have a lot of up and down play in the clutch lever arm. People at Shoe Box Central say the spring that holds the arm in place is off. I will have to pull the transmission to see. I bought another spring. I showed the mechanic that did the work a picture of the spring. He said he didn't remember seeing one. I guess I am going to have to look for myself. |

There is a NOS arm on Ebay if you think you might need it. Item (205296425933), P/N 8A-7515 according to the seller.

What vehicle are we talking about? Is there no inspection cover on the trans housing to look in and see the spring?

i had a similar problem with my50 cpe. after pulling it apart couple times i found the flywheel was shaped like a bowl i took it to a machine shop that machined it on a milling machine came out perfect problems solved hope this helps

I do not believe there is a inspection hole cover but I will look again. Sure would be nice to look. Sorry this is a 50custom V8 with three speed no overdrive. The flywheel was supposed to be re surfaced at a machine shop. I surely hope the guy is telling me the truth but I am having my doubts because it is doing the same thing now as it was before. That's what bothers me. I like to do stuff myself if I can but I don't have a lift so I took it to someone else. Chris with shoe box Central seems to think it is the spring not holding the clutch in place which does kind of make sense but if the were the problem. It would have had to be like that before the guy worked on it. I am thinking about going with a aftermarket flywheel, diaphragm style clutch. Don want to spend the money but I have got to get it fixed. Who sells a reasonable flywheel and pressure plate? |

I looked this afternoon and don't see an inspection cover to check the spring.
To me it has all the signs of the flywheel. Does vibrate and shudder on take off also clutch pedal plusates. Shifting is not good on downshift. I bet it's the dang flywheel. Either it wasn't surfaced correctly or not at all. Bought the new parts and paid 997.00 in labor. I am sick. I hope the anti rattle spring is off but I am afraid not. |

on my 50 when engaging it would chatter something terrible and also i could feel a vibration and if i kept pushing the clutch in and out while driving it would eventually get better i had that clutch apart 3 times before the fellow at the machine shop figured it out the first time i took it apart i had a shop where they did it on a resurface table didn’t work so i found out but the milling machine was the answer

Again, if you do take it apart again, check the alignment. Do you (or know someone who does) have a dial indicator?

Yes I do have indicator my self. Are you talking about checking the flat ess of the flywheel. If I take it off I will have it resurfaced for sure.

I'm no expert myself, as I have never had problems like this, but over the years have read many threads about guys who did. You have to check runout and whether the flywheel is square with the block, etc. A few searches on the "H.A.M.B." might yield some good examples.

Have you checked the throw out bearing and hub? It's very easy for the bearing to be at an angle on the hub. I ordered an assembled unit and the bearing was at an angle. Final solution was new OEM bearing & OEM hub found on eBay and carefully pressed together. The bearing only seats on a very small area at the base of the hub.

I bought a good throw out bearing but not having any luck finding a new hub.
Wonder if anybody has a video of the correct installation of the throwout bearing on the hub and the hub to the arm. Really not sure how it all goes together. |

In the first photo you can see the lip at the base of the hub and the 3/16 or so surface immediately above the lip. That is the seating area. On the bearing you can see the mating surface that matches. Next two pictures show how I checked to make sure it was fully seated (picture shows on that is at a tilt).
Probably OK to reuse your hub if it's not damaged. Mine was bent. The two spring clips attach the assembly to the clutch arm. It just snaps on to the end of the arm. double click the pictures to enlarge them. Last edited by Dick; 03-31-2025 at 09:54 AM. Reason: add info |

Ordered the arm off eBay. Have a new throw out bearing. Looks much better than the one that was put in. Would like to have a new hub.
Trying to get as many new parts as I can before I take it apart. Found a stock flywheel on eBay. I can't tell in the picture if it's ok. I am sure it would need to be resurfaced which I would do but by the time I did that I think I would be better off buying a new one. Still trying to figure this out. Speedway shows a flywheel for 279.00 but I don't believe it works with a stock pressure plate. I need to call and talk to them. |
