I will be leaving Wilkesboro on Wednesday, the 19th, to drive my Model A to Ruidoso. I plan to do about 400 miles each day for 4 days, a total of about 1,600 miles. I have hotel reservations for the way there and the way back. I will try to post a daily log, if I am still conscious at the end of the day.
Several Model A owners are driving their Model A's from the San Jose, California area. They are taking 7 days to go about 1,200 miles. What about you? Are you driving there in your Model A? Synchro will be there but is not taking his car from Australia. I have my car ready. It is anxious to go and is creeping an inch closer to the door each night while I sleep. I have perhaps loaded it up with too much stuff. My concern is the weather. I don't want to get stuck in a tornado or die from heat exhaustion. So far the weather looks acceptable. My air conditioning is a jug of water to wet down my clothes and an open windshield. The other concern is how I am going to drive two cars back to Wilkesboro when I win the raffle for the Tudor.

We'll be there as well, but trailering the Model A instead of driving. It's about 5000 miles round trip and just don't have the time to drive the A all that distance.

I’ll be in one of the groups from San Jose (I’m in TK and SK’s group) noodling along at about 260 miles/day. Nk, I’d love to meet you and any other barners face to face. Synchro, should be able to find an Aussie among us Yanks.
In preparation for the drive I’ve been going through the car catching up on those “round tuit” chores. Amazing how much better the car rides when there’s fluid in the shock absorbers. From the looks of things they haven’t been touched since the car was “restored” in the 80’s.

For Roadster air conditioning I use a spray bottle filled with water, and at each rest stop I wet my hat. Anticipating receiving my rebuilt engine, I’m installing the firewall insulator, purchased from one of the big vendors.

Years ago I was riding a motorcycle from Phoenix to Yuma in early June - not the best planning, I admit. I couldn’t leave Phoenix until 10am, and it was 110F. I stopped in Gila Bend for some fluids and met up with a local. He taught me that the way to stay cool was to put on a thoroughly soaked shirt then completely zip up a jacket over that. The jacket slowed down the evaporation sufficiently to keep comfortable for an hour, which is just about how far water stops were across southern Arizona. Kind of a shock when you re-wet the shirt. It was 123F when I pulled into Yuma but I was still comfortable. I’ve used that trick for over 40 years now and it still works.

I will be flying there from San Jose, CA. My wife has back issues and will not be with me. I look forward to meeting many model Aers. I will be hosting the Victoria Association meeting on Friday, if anyone want to drop by.

I'll be trailering my 28 Coupe from San Diego. It's about 900 miles. Not sure I'll do that in one day.

In the news this morning (Tuesday, June 18), there are two fires surrounding Ruidoso and the town is being evacuated. Unless the news improves by tomorrow morning, I will have to cancel my trip.

Yep, we have friends there, they got out yesterday. I hope they can save the town, going to be bad I'm afraid.

My wife's dad used to live there. I designed the home that he had built with a view of "Old Baldy". Hope the place is still there and is safe. Love to visit there every time we have extra cash and time.

PNM had to shut off electrical power to part of the town. It's going to be a rough one there.

I am very concerned about the meet, but more importantly, I am concerned about the people who may loose their houses or businesses, or God forbid, loved ones. I called my hotel and they are refunding reservations. I will make a decision tomorrow morning. The 6 Model A group from Silicon Valley are still traveling east.

I've been through wildfires here in California and I can tell you that the air quality as well as all the ash and soot everywhere will be horrible. We'll have to see what pans out. It's a real shame if they have to cancel the meet with all of the work and efforts that have been put into it.

The latest news says that 500 "structures" have been "effected." I think that means that someone's home has burned. Ruidoso web cam shows the smoke and fire just outside the town.

I just got a message that the group from Silicon Valley is canceling. Has anybody heard from the organizers?
