Mello Tones on a Y block
This what her new exh. system sounds like. Nice little rumble when I get her dialed in.

Re: Mello Tones on a Y block
What mufflers did you use? Size? How loud when you're on it?

Re: Mello Tones on a Y block
Just bought Mello Tones-22" (the longest ones) as I didn't want the crackly sound of the short ones. Just on idle for now, I will post a second video when I get the engine sorted out.

Re: Mello Tones on a Y block
My streetrod has Flowmasters, and it seems too loud for me. The car has a 373:1 gear, so maybe that has something to do with it. My last streetrod had Cherry Bombs on it, which were not too bad. I put a set of MagnaFlows on my 57 Skyliner with a Y-block. Pretty normal sounding...untill you take off from a light and floor it. Then you get that Y-block sound I have always heard about. Took my Dad for a ride, and he sure noticed! I'd buy MagnaFlow again!

Re: Mello Tones on a Y block
The physical size is the same as factory. Factory size pipe too. Factory exhaust manifolds.
Borla - I always like those. Especially with the large tubes. But the price!!!! |

Re: Mello Tones on a Y block
Space is limited on my 55 Tbird; the Borlas are pretty close to the same size as OEM, but 2 1/4 in and out vs. 2 in and 1 3/4 out for OEM. I also bought their resonators, which were actually more expensive than the mufflers. The resonators, in theory, deepen the tone and reduce/eliminate drone. Although 56-57 Tbird resonators are located towards the rear, after the mufflers, most recommend putting resonators before the mufflers.

Re: Mello Tones on a Y block
I've had Flowmasters and others, and they've been good, but I love the sound of the Mello Tones.

I have the same set of glass packs that I installed way back in 1992. I love the sound, but I know they are not the greatest on performance. Back then I also replaced the rear pipes - believe they are 1.75" exit. Everything is still as solid as it can be, but with my upgrade to a a set of true headers last year I do want to increase the flow and size of the pipes. I did buy a set of Summit's performance mufflers but I believe they are a Flowmasters copy. I would like to go with at least a 2" pipe out the rear.

Re: Mello Tones on a Y block
Back in the day, we always put a balance tube between the two pipes, ahead of the mufflers. It made the Y-block sound much smoother. Product of the firing order I guess, as they always sound like the spark is retarded without the tube.
I like 36" glasspacks, as Flowmasters sound like a trash truck to me. I will be removing them from my 55 T-Bird. YMMV |

Re: Mello Tones on a Y block
I have considered putting an H-pipe on my 55 Tbird for that reason. I've been communicating with an owner of a 57 E-code Tbird who did the same. Ted Eaton, however, said that neither an H nor X-pipe will increase Y-block performance.
Most Flowmasters that I've heard on vehicles without cats have a metallic sound, similar to marbles rattling inside a tin can. |

Re: Mello Tones on a Y block
Sounds good, I think my wagon has the same, but very old ones. Those sound new and crispy, Idle sounds good too.
FYI I think there is an image on wagon exhaust routing for the tips. There a certain angle and length, which you can do with the chrome extension, so exhaust doesnt come into the cabin if the rear window is up . |

Re: Mello Tones on a Y block
If the window is up or down. Carbon monoxide collects at the rear of the car in motion and will enter the cabin.

Re: Mello Tones on a Y block
Yep, I had him replicate the location of the original single exhaust. I will put angled tips on eventually. Dress her up a bit. But right now I am doing floor pans.
