A small magnet and a bit of epoxy is all you need to turn your plug into a magnetic one!

I made my own for engine trans and rear end using 1/4” long 1/4” diameter high strength magnets I bought online. Just drill into drain plugs 3/16” deep 1/4” wide and stick them in they will hold themselves no glue needed very difficult to get out. When I change the oils the plugs are always loaded with “fuzz” that would have been circulating otherwise. I believe them to be very effective at keeping the oil’s free of fillings. Cylinders wear and everyone grinds a gear now and then.

If it's a pipe thread McMaster-Carr has them. Don't be alarmed the first time you see how many crumbs are stuck to it.

I believe that babbitt is non-magnetic. However, cotter pins fatigue and wind up in the pan. What else is magnetic that would stick to a magnetic drain plug?

I agree, McMaster-Carr has magnetic plugs. I also use one in my Mitchell O/D and rear end. Last edited by Y-Blockhead; 03-29-2021 at 10:59 AM. Reason: Edit |

Just a point of interest...
I have magnetic plugs in all three locations: engine, tranny and rear end. When I pull the plugs to check/drain oil, I always get some 'dust' on the plugs. Not very much, but a little. I highly recommend them. I think I got them at McMaster-Carr. Dick |

I've been using a magnet on every drain plug (4 per car including O/D) for years. I just put the magnet on the plug and screw it in. It never moves and It's easy to clean when I pull it off the plug. They cost a matter of cents each.
