Re: 3 on the tree t56 gear box r10 0d problem
Nothing. I don't know if I ever had a 3 speed shift through all the gears just sitting and not moving. Sometimes I might if I push in the clutch pedal. If the transmission shifted into all 3 gears and reverse while in the air it was probably because the rear tires could move?
roll the car a bit and see what happens. can't you start it and drive it to test the transmission?

Re: 3 on the tree t56 gear box r10 0d problem
yes i start it and try it with the linkage off and manually shift it with just the tranny lever i try it with linkage hooked up and all the same results reverse if off the floor but not when i set it down 1st second and high work fine though the od lever has been pulled out several times and when i use od position like pushed in and selinod is activated to od i try reverse very slightly and it reacts properly like trys to lock up so i fuss with that and it comes loose so i just cant figure it out !!

Quote:
Unhook your terminals at the solenoid, do a physical check of the arm on the tail shaft that engages/disengages the arm rail and push the top of the lever FORWARD to lock out OD. Start the car and shift to reverse while in the air to make sure it goes into that gear and that the rear wheels turn. Drop the car and do the same test. The only other issue I "think" you are expressing has to do with the linkage arms up to the steering column. Are these adjusted correctly? there is a procedure in both the 55 and 56 shop manuals about how to set the transmission levers both to neutral, adjust the shift rods for proper length (the rods that go to the steering column), and check for shifting into gear. I have just now got my 3 speed with Borg Warner OD squared away on my 55 Ford Fairlane Club Sedan. There is a lot of help for you here if you want to search through my pictures and videos... https://www.hotrodreverend.com/in-pr.../Borg%20Warner My transmission is a side loader but has the same tail shaft as your T86. EDIT: maybe I am reading this all wrong...lol, are you saying you can shift INTO reverse but the wheels don't turn/power doesn't go through transmission?

Something is wrong with the lock out rail installation. Try pulling the OD handle out to make the reverse work.

Re: 3 on the tree t56 gear box r10 0d problem
There is enough friction in the OD part of the trans to move the wheels while in the air. Your problem sounds like the lock out rail isn't installed correctly. Don't engage reverse with OD engaged.

Re: 3 on the tree t56 gear box r10 0d problem
I feel your pain... I had to remove the transmission in and out of the driveline THREE times before I was satisfied with the results. But now she is as smooth and trouble-free as could be. Keep at it, you'll find it.

Re: 3 on the tree t56 gear box r10 0d problem
If the low/reverse gear was turned around, the fork won't fit in the groove of the gear it might push it one way but not pull it back if it fits in there at all. I/m more familiar with the early Ford transmissions, the 259 series, and the T85 than the T86 but all of them have to have a mechanism that pushes the rail back when reverse gear is selected. If it doesn't, the unit will free wheel in reverse. The car can be pushed back but the engine won't turn the output shaft of the transmission. That OD shift rail has to be locked out either with the cable pull or the reverse mechanism.

Re: 3 on the tree t56 gear box r10 0d problem
Thanks rotowrence i am almost sure it has to be in that overdrive rail something isnt fitted up quite right I know that it is getting a good grip on reverse so the slidergear is engaging in low and reverse i hope it is the rail off the od side but it sure is the first time i ever had this happen i am bypassing the govener shift and incorperated a rocker switch you know the old 6 speed shift if ya wanted it thing. i will try it once more without any elect power to the selinoid maybe i have a wire reversed there anyhow its cool up here in montana if ya want to come and fix a tranny lol lol all the cold water you can drink lol lol just kidding i will get it it if i just go out there and get to work on it
