I have a 1928 closed cab pick up. Everything I read tells me I should have a threaded gas cap but I have a gas cap that has tabs and it seals on a quarter-turn. All the catalogs show the 28 29 gas cap is threaded and the 30 31 with tabs. Is it possible to have a tabbed 28 gas tank? Thanks

The 28/29 CCPU style cab went to July 1930. 1930 gas tanks had the quarter turn gas caps. I could be wrong, but I suspect someone installed an early 1930 gas tank on your pickup.

Does it have a 7 tooth or 2 tooth steering gear with 30-31 type steering wheel.

Rusty, you just beat me to it. JS says the quarter turn cap was introduced in April, 1930 and continued through June, 1930.

Well I think I have a 1928, How can I tell the difference between a 7 tooth and a two tooth the steering column is out but not disassembled? I do not believe the gas tank has been changed as I am the one who removed it and it seems like it was the original install, paint matched and original welting was in place. I do have 29 headlights though. What are some other ways I can tell a 28 from a 29? As you can tell I'm new to all of this, any help is greatly appreciated. Where is the engine s/n stamped on the frame? I assume that will help.

The 7 tooth steering has a one piece welded box and column, while the later 2 tooth steering has a clamp to hold the column to the main steering box.

AA trucks used the tall cab like yours until mid 1930. The fuel tanks in the early 1930 AA trucks were the same shape as all 1928-1929 pickups, cars etc- only they had the non threaded 1/4 turn 1930 style cap.

X2 Have you considered that the entire cab on your truck may be a transplant? Later cab on earlier chassis?

When you find it enter it here...for the manufacture date of the engine.

Looks like I have a two tooth box which points to a 29 instead of a 28, right. Looking for engine number today. Thanks to all.

1928closed, welcome to the Barn. Where do you live? As you have have been informed; it is possible to have a 28/29 styled truck with the 30/31 1/4 turn gas cap. There are more out there then you realize. My Father-in-law has a AA with the later gas cap as well. Again welcome to the Barn, and post often.

easy enough...the 2 tooth is a 2 piece column, the 7 tooth is 1 piece column.
Add your location to your reply info. it can help in finding a local guy to help you. |
