Default 36 rear end color

I'm restoring a 36 pickup. Got the rear end out and after cleaning 80 years of muck and yuck off of it. The center section and about 3 or 4 inches of the axle tube is painted orange. Is this factory or did someone try to get fancy with a paint can?
Thanks
Mark

While black was the standard color for all chassis components, fleet buyers had the option to provide their own paint (subject to approval by Ford's Engineering Department) and could at extra cost have the entire chassis painted in something other than black. In your case, if more components turn out to have been originally orange then perhaps your truck was an example of this fleet option. If not, then someone got creative with a paint can.
