Update from previous thread. Replaced fan belt hoping age was problem why water pump was not turning. Not the case. Pump turns with some resistance by hand but not with engine started. Must pull water pump. Questions - What steps do I take to make sure hood goes back on in proper position? Stone guard right up against light bar, assume will come off after loosening clips - at that point will radiator move forward enough to remove water pump? Will drain water and loosen top radiator hose. Also loosen radiator support bars. Appreciate any help and advise. Thanks.

To pull my pump with four blade fan, I had to remove the light bar to swing the radiator far enough forward. I put in the pretend studs, but I think the impeller keeps those from being a silver bullet, unless you have a two blade fan.

If the radiator and hood are in good alignment, then just loosen the nuts on the front side of the rods and lift them up. If you don't move the nuts on the rear side of the radiator mount, then just tighten the front when you reinstall them, and everything should be the same.

just support the hood and remove the Radiator it's a hole lot easier and saver otherwise you might try what i did

also as far as the water pump not turning, i had the same thing after car sat for many years. i loosened the belt so there was slippage, loosened the packing nut on the pump started the motor and carefully started tightening the belt tell the pump started turning, might want the rpm's up a little and the water pump
mine would turn very hard by hand i pumped grease in it and moved it back and forth a lot tell i had it a little freed up

Don't know how to get stone guard off radiator. Two clips attached to holes for headlight grommets and see nothing else to remove. I think I'm missing something. Looks like bottom left and right 3 inches from bottom behind screen something there. Any idea? Thanks.

Pull-up on the guard to remove.

if it was me, i would leave the stone guard on and disconnect everything from the engine side of the radiator!
if not able to do it by yourself get someone to help and pick it straight up and out is the easiest way to get at the water pump then you don't have to worry about nicking the radiator
where there's a well there's a way

Any tips for removing/supporting the hood by yourself? I tried to hang it overhead, but it was very unwieldy and took a lot of careful work.

Those two clips are all that's holding it on.

I never leave the hood in place if I remove a radiator, head, or engine. I grab it near the center hinge and carry it away and set it on a blanket.

Are the center sections up and you grip them high just below where they curve away from each other?

Yes, that just how I do it. My car has 50's paint and needs to be restored, so I really don't have to worry much about the paint.

I put a two blade fan on and while tilting the radiator forward, used a stick cut to length with a notch on top to hold the rod up while the edges were resting on the hood props. The stick is held upright by a ty-wrap around the water pump neck and the dangling radiator rods.

I removed the stone guard (two clamps on the side and lift up), drained radiator, loosened top hose clamps, loosened front nut on hood rods, cut a piece of 1x2 to support hood, pulled radiator forward, loosened fan belt, installed piece of cardboard between rad and w/pump. removed 4 nuts on the pump, and slowly/carefully removed pump. Reverse to install.

It's a breeze if you have the after market hood props that mount on the rad support rods. Hood doesn't need to come off as both sides rest on the props. Without the props, just place a board under and crosswise to the rad rods and prop this board up with a 2x4 down to the head and rest the hood sides on the board. Removing the hood by yourself without damaging it is difficult (don't ask me how I know). Per Tom, just loosen the front rod nuts and lift the rods up. Drain coolant, loosen the top hose and pull the rad forward enough to get the water pump off and on. I also have a stone guard but didn't have to fool with it or the light bar to get the rad far enough forward. I put on a new pump, took off a two blade and changed to a six blade fan this way with no trouble.

Are you trying to remove or replace the pump with the fan attached? Much easier to do if the fan is not on the pump.....don't have to move the rad as far forward with the fan off.

Thanks for all the help. Pulled stone guard off with your suggestions. Removed hood with the help of three others. Water pump came out with no problem after pulling radiator forward. Water pump is almost frozen tight. Going to A shop tomorrow to have it rebuilt. Should be up and running tomorrow. Liked idea of not removing hood - but moved forward before I got info. Appreciate of your suggestions. Nice to have the experience out there. You guys are great. Thanks.
