Backseat installation in 1950 business coupe

I pulled the backseat years ago and have just gotten it reupholstered and ready to reinstall. Problem is: I have forgotten exactly how it goes.

I seem to recall the that back rest is held on with two large screws at the top (accessible through the trunk) and the seat itself just sort of fits into some catches on the floor.

Is this right or is everything bolted/screwed down some way?

Could be wrong but I seem to remember that the backrest hooks at the top and there are two screws on the bottom.

I didn't think "Business Coupes" had a back seat, just a platform. Maybe it was an option? If not you may be dealing with a "Bubba" installation, and who knows what he may have done. If it will do you any good, I can look at my '51 club coupe and tell you what I find. Let me know.

The backrest hooks into two brackets along the package shelf. The brackets at the bottom screw into the floor pan.

Thanks for the info. I recall that my grandmother told me that the back seat was an option (as were the front seatbelts). The version without a backseat was called a "salesman."

I don't see a place near the package tray where the back rest can hook on, but there are two screw holes below that at the top (and I have two screws and washers in my "parts" bag).

The seat itself is a wood frame and there are brackets that stick up from the floor pan that look like they might keep in from sliding forward. No place to bolt it down however (and I seem to remember that it always was loose that way).

I've Never heard of a "salesman" car, but the 1950 "Business coupe"
was a 3 passenger with NO backseat, it had a platform back there.
I would think that the rear seat backrest would hook over a pair of
brackets near the rear shelf, and then a couple bolts at the bottom
of the rear seat backrest to hold it in place.

I didn't think seat belts were an option in 1950 Fords. I thought they
were introduced in the mid-50's or so.

The Deluxe Business Coupe ( D 72C ) has a parcel shelf, cardboard side and back panels. The rear quarter windows do not open.
The Custom Deluxe Coupe ( C 72 ) has a back seat, upholstered side panels and the windows open.

Seat belts not an option until 1956. I'm no expert on '50's, but it is starting to sound like the seat was an "add-on".

I think that the back seat was OEM, mainly because when I took the seat covers off, it had the original upholstery that matched the front seat. It was also turned out professionally in terms of the springs, burlap and joinery on the wood frame. Not a "bubba" job.

So, wouldn't the back seat from a sedan fit the coupe in any event?

The two tabs at the top of the package tray bracket in bbrust's second picture is where I remember the backrest being screwed on.

And for you sedan owners: Is your back seat bolted/screwed on in any way?

It may be OEM from another car. Does the upholstery match the upholstery on the front seat? It may be a junkyard seat that someone put in your car to replace the platform.

I have a '50 Fordor and a '51 tudor and the rear seat back attaches like mentioned in the previous posts. Two tabs slide into slots on the top-front of the package tray and two flat tabs on the bottom get bolted to the floor pan......MARK

It seems as if you are going to have to get out and look at what you have.
