The July 1, 1931 Ford Parts Price List book does not list a lock washer for the rear hood clip bolts (P/N A-20276-S1) for the 30-31 Model A. Only a flat washer is listed. This is unusual because nearly all bolts and nuts either had a lock washer or a cotter pin. Could this be an omission or misprint? I also checked other 30-31 Ford Parts Price List and they are all the same, no lock washer. The JS does not go into that much detail so no answer there. Any thoughts guys??

Arlyn, my guess on this is that the flat washers A-22095 was 7/16" in diameter so it would not slip through the slots in the hood hook brackets riveted to the frame for the rear hooks. Four are required for the rear hook bolts. The front lock washers A-22088, also four required, are a 21/64" diameter which is definitely smaller diameter than the flat washers.

Gary, I agree with you, the 7/16" flat washer is needed because of the "slot" in the bracket. My thoughts are a lock washer is needed in addition to the flat washer. I think Henry was well aware of how the 4 cylinder engine vibrates plus the road conditions of that era so in nearly all cases either a lock washer or a cotter pin was used on the nuts on the chassis. So why not is this situation. Could be a case of omission in the parts book. We all know there are errors in the parts book. Just my thoughts. Arlyn

Keep in mind Ford went out of his way to do the rod threads with tight tolerance. So they nuts will fit very snug and not wallow around. But that means you cant have run a tap or die on the rods or nuts they came with or use repro nuts.

I ruined a set chasing the threads. Wont make that mistake again.

You can see here where the tight tolerance threads make a huge difference in how the nuts will hold. The U channels can cause things to get out of kilter and let the nuts work loose. With tight tolerance threads you can see the nut stay parallel as you tighten down and you know it is going to hold as it has a different feel as it gets tight.
