Back in the olden days the local Gomer and Goober grease monkeys were not well versed on cam lobe separation, duration, overlap, etc. So in order to avoid getting too technical they just called the aftermarket performance cams 1/2 race, 3/4 race, and full race to indicate how radical the cam was, how much power it made, and how suitable it may or may not be for street driving.
