Good evening,
I am helping a friend to install a new cutout to his '28 Phaeton. He previously had mixed up the wires and as a result has no idea where the wires should be attached. I refer to the attached picture. Please can someone advise which wires go to the terminal marked in red, and which wires go to the terminal marked in yellow? Kind regards Mike Johannesburg, South Africa |

Your picture is too small to see any detail, but the terminal that is closest to the mounting feet is the input terminal and get connected to the generator output stud. NOTHING else should be on this terminal. The ammeter and horn/lights wires get connected to the output terminal.
The mounting feet on Model A cutouts are open, and the open side faces the output stud. The mounting feet on later cutouts are closed feet, but are offset and the close side faces the output stud. |

From what I see and if it is a diode, if when you hook the wire up in the yellow circle and you see it doesn't spark you should be OK. If it sparks when you touch it turn the cut around.
The generator will act as a motor so if you see a spark the battery current is going thru the cut-out and attempts to make it motor. It's just a one way valve. If you turn the cut out around it stops battery current getting to the generator but allows current from the generator to flow to the battery,.

All wires go to the yellow circle. Notice the insulators are one thicker than the other. The thicker one should be on the output side, and it looks like you have them switched. |

My car isn't here but just looking at the picture it looked as tho' it may have been in backwards, thus the general statement.. Funny the older I get the mind sees what it wants too.

Thanks guys, as you can see from the picture, the output from the generator is in one position, so the cutout can't be turned around. I'm happy if you say all wires attach to the terminal in the yellow circle.
Tom, as far as the insulators, that is exactly how the cutout was supplied by Mike's A Fordable, do you think I should just leave it like it is then? Mike |

One other thing, how do you test a generator because the owner tells me that he thinks it isn't working? Your input would be really useful on this one please....

To test the generator just take a voltage reading at the output stud with the engine running at fast idle. It should be more than battery voltage with the engine off. A quick easy check at night is to shine the lights on the garage door, then with the engine at fast idle, turn the key off. If the headlamps dim slightly as the engine quits then you know the generator was working. |
