Tried the search function but only came up with heaters for sale.
Is there anyone that sells a template to drill the holes in the correct location on the firewall of a 1940 ford coupe for the hot water heater? Car is all stock except the 8BA engine that was saved from the hands of a traditional hotrodder. They seem to be messing up cars now as bad as the streetrodders of the 90's |

Not sure there is a set location as there were various heaters installed. Which heater are you using? Would think the best approach would be to temporally install the heater and determine an acceptable location for the water lines. I am going to attempt to route mine so that I do not have to cut up the firewall (after I patch the current heater holes in the firewall!).

I would suggest a test fit. When I installed a heater in my "41 the cowl vent handle hits it. The cowl vent only opens part way. A test fit would have caught this.

I put a factory heater in my 41 pu and with my big feet I could hardly get to the gas pedal, so I had to move the heater up-yeah I know extra holes but the install hides them, to gain clearance for the cowl vent handle, I just bent it to a 45% angle and all is well

My '41 has the heater centered on the tranny hump. Vent handle did hit the heater top so I modified the handle slightly to open vent all the way and come up short of the heater.

I was not aware that Ford had a specific heater for the 1940 cars, thought the Ford setup was a manifold setup (that is what was on my 38). Does your heater look like the attached photo? Was this a dealer installed option? It would still be fairly easy to back engineer it if you knew were it attached under the dash. Maybe if someone had some photos on one installed?

Both.
However, there were only the two types I'd mentioned that were Ford authorized.

Its the correct 2 door heater for the 40 with the switch. I have had other 39 and 40 with heaters that were either apart or I parted it out but never remembered to make a template. Then we end up with this car and want to install the heater because I did not want to use the gasoline southwind thats in it now.
I have also had 40 fords with the death trap hot air manifold heater. |

Had a Southwind in a 41 Chevy I drove in High School, loved that heater! On the coldest day could get in that car and instant heat.

I have a38 standard with a heater that is identical to the one in the photo. It had to be dealer installed, with 41 controls. No room for your foot on the gas pedal, maybe they had little feeties back in them days. The southwind is a great heater, you're going to need a winter front, with the hot water unit.

got it printed out and now i can get the correct heater installed in this survivor coupe. car was parked in the mid 60's and left alone . only thing besides the southwind heater the car had the 85hp motor replaced in 1960 with a rebuilt 59AB at a ford dealership. in the paperwork was the invoice for the work....... rebuilt motor 159.90..... too bad a they dont cost that now to overhaul.

Contact Larry Caplan of Northridge, Ca (he is in the V8 club roster) he has the correct template for installing a 1940 Ford hot water heater and sells other related parts.
