Does anyone know of a lube for shut off valves? The valves on two of my "A's" are real hard to turn and one is a new one. Also I'm having trouble with a tapered plug valve on a "B" John Deere. I was wondering if I rubbed some kind of soap on them if it would stay on them and not cause troubles else where. I know soap will work in an emergence when you knock a hole in a gas tank and gas don't break it down. Maybe someone knows of something made just for the business.

I think one of the Model T suppliers sells such a product, Lang's Model T Parts. Kind of pricey though.

I bought some stuff that was for lubricating gas valves but it didn't last but two days and it became hard to turn again. I didn't find any EZ-lube but still looking.

What works a long time (years) for me is powdered graphite during assembly with NO grease or other lube. I rub it on and rub it in 'till the surfaces are shiny gray. It does not wash or dissolve in gas, and if any of the powder gets through into the carb and engine, it is harmless. I suppose powdered Moly-D would also work.

A stock shut off valve does not have o-rings. It's a tapered fit and uses graphite packing like the water pump.
From the model T forum; I worked "Plug Valve Grease" into the felt before installing on line. That's the same stuff that is also called "Gas Tite Grease" and is designed to lubricate fuel valves. The felt seal has been in service for 15 years now with nary a hint of a leak. I also lubricated the (original) valve with the same grease. It's getting a little hard to turn now. Guess lubing it once every 15 years isn't too much to ask. Ignore the part about felt packing/seal. |

Good ole WD-40 might work. Even if you had to use it every time you went out.

We used a cock grease in the Shell oil refinery I used to work at that was gasoline proof as it wasn't hydrocarbon based...we ordered it from a company here in Houston called "Val-Tex"...I'm to call them and see if I could purchase some over the counter...

I use the ez turn fuel lube also on my 30 gas cap gasket and radiator cap gasket.
Takes less effort to get them off. John |
