Default Painting Question.

When painting fenders, do you guys paint the bottoms and then the tops in a different session, or do you paint both sides in the same session? I'd welcome any photos of how you stage (support them ) as well.
Thanks for any suggestions.

I hang mine. I'm not sure whether this is the best way or not. Once the underside is done, doing the top is relatively easy. I'm doing the undersides of the fenders with Rustoleum Truck Bed coating to cushion any rock strikes to the under sides of the fender.

I am attaching pictures of the method I use to paint fenders. I made some cheesy post with rags around the top to prevent scratching to set the fenders on. I bolt the fenders through one of the mounting holes to stabilize them. You can see the bolt studs if you look close. I hang the fenders to paint the underside as it isn't as critical at the top side (I do the underside first). I figure that painting the fenders close to how they will be on the car is the better way. I think it also minimizes chances for runs and sags. I am sure there are many ways to paint fenders, this is just my way that has worked well for me

Bottom side, then top side. Usually use single stage on the bottom, and base/clear on the top side.

I paint outside as well. Always color sand and buff. The bugs aren't as big a problem as you might think...at least not here in NE Illinois. I have to wait for a low humidity day but that hasn't been a problem for me.

As far as fenders go I do the inside first, sand off any over spray around the edges and then lay the top coat.

Russ/40,
I don't have room inside to paint and I don't want to get paint on everything. I do get some bugs in the paint, but 98+% of them can be colorsanded out. Big bugs like June bugs or Ladybugs can be a problem, but I have only had that happen a couple times in all the many times I have paint outside. I live in the country, so no one can complain about my spraying. I did get caught in a light sprinkle once - what a mess. The weather look good, but on the third coat (for colorsand paint thickness) a cloud came over and some light sprinkles occurred before the last coat had dried. I had to sand out the top coat, it it wasn't as bad as I had thought it might be - still it was extra work. I am real careful now to make sure there is NO chance of rain when I paint.

Russ,
Like some of the other guys.. I do them in two sessions. I usually paint the underneath side first... and then the next day ( or two) mask off the underneath and paint the top sides. You want to get enough paint ( but not too much) on the fender bead edges and areas so that you don't get thin. I usually put 5-6 coats on so I have enough to color sand off in graduating grits and buff.

Paint wise I like for appearance/quality, and goes on well, the Sherwin Williams 2nd dimension single stage. Just my preference.

I paint the bottoms first. After a couple of days I mask the bottoms and paint the tops. Let them set for a few days, then color sand and buff. I used single stage last time, but I'm thinking of using something less expensive on my current restoration, as my cars are inside most of the time.
