I must remove my water pump because it keeps getting loose even with cotter key. Wrong taper on fan or large woodruff key, don't know which is causing the problem.
Who ever put on the pump used bolts instead of studs and I hope I can get It off with out removing radiator. Do the bolts allow enough room to remove a 4 blade fan ? I have a two blade ready to install. |

If it is a bolt on blade 4-blade fan ( where fan blades bolt to hub with 4-bolts) then yes. Unbolt blades and remove If rivited probably not. I have done it once but it was difficult and typically can't be done.
Another reason to run a 2-blade fan.... which I would recommend you put on instead of what you have... especially in light of your trouble. I'm sure you will.. but be careful of the radiator. I thin piece of cardboard or plastic sheeting helps protect the radiator if needed. Larry Shepard Last edited by larrys40; 05-21-2014 at 07:23 PM. |

"Who ever put on the pump used bolts instead of studs"
By doing so he made it easier to remove the pump. With the bolts out, and the blade off, the pump can just swing to the side and be easily removed. Studs will stop you from doing that. Many of us also grind the corners off the impellor vanes to more easily allow swinging the pump off to the side.

On my Model A to remove the riveted fan and water pump assembly with the BOLTS that look like nuts on studs I had to:
1) remove the radiator shroud 2) loosen the bottom radiator mount bolts 3) loosen four and remove the two upper headlight bar bolts (bar needs to tilt slightly) 4) place a piece of cardboard between radiator and fan 5) take the upper radiator rods loose at the radiator 6) remove the pump bolts-tilt the radiator forward so that the headlight bar moves just enough- remove pump with fan. This is really not as complicated as it sounds. A two blade fan can be removed without all that. I have one on my car now with a leakless pump. Hope this helps, Chet Last edited by Growley bear; 05-22-2014 at 07:56 AM. Reason: add text |

I may have bend the blades on the old fan to get it off. |

with the bolts out and two blade fan you should NOT have to remove the radiator or hood. remove the belt, loosen the upper radiator hose make sure the hose is loose , loosen the nut on the radiator rods. remove the bolts from the water pump. remove the radiator rods from the radiator, now get a hold of the front of hood hold it in place pull the radiator forward at the same time get a hold of the water pump and remove it. push your radiator back in place to hold the hood until you are cleaned up and ready to install the new pump

Not sure I understand. Is it correct that a 2 blade fan ( the new aluminum one ) can be removed from the water pump shaft without removing the pump or the radiator ? Thanks, Bill

I got it off without removing radiator but I had to cut off one of the fan blades. This wound up not being a big deal as the woodruff key had turned inside the fan cutting a groove half way around so the fan was toast anyhow. Shaft was ok.
Any want t try a three blade fan. Its a bit off balance Last edited by gridleak; 05-22-2014 at 06:49 PM. |

I think you may have the same problem I had where the taper on the lealkess water pump stainless steel shaft was not correct so had a four blade fan hit the new radiator which was installed when the A was rebuilt in 2006. Luckily did not do any damage to radiator except a few fins ruffled. Replaced the fan blade with a two blade aluminum and this one hit the crankcase pulley. Replaced the water pump with one form Arizona Model A's and the two blade fit perfectly on the shaft and there was no wobble. I took out the radiator and having it repaired as was leaking around the top inlet connection. Removing the radiator makes the job easier. You don't want to damage the fins as radiators are not cheap. I replaced all the water pump studs with stainless steel ones when the engine was rebuilt. No rust and the stainless steel nuts come off easy. Was surprised no rust visible in the head. The new pump has a collar at the front of the pump so there is no grinding of the shaft to get the end play set correctly.

What does the nut look like that holds the fan on. On mine someone had put a nut on that was tapered sort of like a wheel lug nut. Not being flat on the surface that contacts the fan it kept working its way into the fan wallowing it out making it loose soon after tightening it again and again. Finally figured out what was going on and replaced the nut along with the fan and all is good again.

I have a 1928 leatherback sedan (restored in 1969). I want to replace my waterpump with a leakless one, have a 2 blade fan & radiatord shroud & locking radiator cap. Questions:
- the radiator locking cap was custom built. I cannot see how it "locks" onto the radiator threaded neck. Looks like there are notches on it for a spanner wrench? - can I remove /move the radiator with the shroud enough to get thje water pump off? I think I will have to first discinnect the shrout, move it back over the engine to remove the radiator ? - does the light bar & headlite wiring have to be removed? |

I have a leakless pump with a 2 blade aluminum fan. The pump is mounted with the 4 studs that have the nuts attached. I recently removed the pump with the fan attached without loosening the radiator. It came out easily without touching the radiator.
If you have a pump with a 2 bladed fan that is mounted to the block with the original studs you will have to detach the 2 upper radiator support rods at the radiator end, lower the collant level in the radiator, and disconnect the upper water hose. This will allow tipping the radiator forward to provide enough clearance to remove the pump assembly without damaging the radiator. My guess is if you have a 4 bladed fan it will have to be removed before removing the pump. |

I always put a piece of cardboard between the fan and the radiator to protect it.

Why the reluctance to removing the radiator? It only takes a few minutes. It makes any front end work on the engine so much easier.
