Default brake chatter

I have a 1947 pickup that has a very bad brake chatter. It shakes the truck very badly. I bought the rolling chassis, but all the brake parts look new and in proper order. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Are the leading and trailing edges of the shoes chamfered?? Have the shoes been arced to the drums??

I just got through chamfering the shoes. Don't know if they have been arced, but I doubt it. The chatter is so bad it may be the chamfer but I will be surprised if that solves it. Don't know of anyone around here that arces brake shoes.

This is how I did it on the cheap, PSA 80 grit sanding board sandpaper stuck to drum, then go at it with the shoes, worked for me. Zeke

As well as above ,Your shoes can be sitting to low or of centre it could be the backing plate or the anchor point .Measure to the axle from the lining .

I'm thinking that the truck brakes are the same system as the car brakes, they don't have the mechanical adjust pivot arrangement the 1939-41 have. There is a slot and washer arrangement that lets the shoe find the center.

My thought is to go to adjust each wheel separately and look for an out of round situation... Over adjust the shoes and you will find the offender in a hurry... Start in the rear.

That sounds reasonable karl ,The early juice brakes have the two centring anchor bolts at the bottom .if its this system then it could be adjusted out I think .Ted

Once upon a time I accidentally contaminated new shoes with brake fluid and tried to flush and bake it off in an oven. Looked good but brake chattered at low speed.
