I just checked the play on my water pump, and I got about 1/8 of an inch. I am looking at a leak less water pump from snyders, that way I don,t have to worry about the head (that is the free play). My question would be, am I in danger of loosing my water pump/radiator if I keep running this like it is?

I like to rebuild original pumps, using a new stainless steel shaft. Then use the collar on the front, behind the pulley to control end play. I wouldn't run It this way for to long.

It could be possible that the pressed on impeller has worked its' way rearward to end of the shaft. I think I would pull the pump and have a look. If you knew the impeller was pinned to the shaft, then I wouldn't worry.

I'll bet this guy never asked "how long do I have".
![]() ![]() When you have more than about 1/16" end play the thrust washer can drop out of place and wear on the shaft, as pictured, until the impellor drops off and the fan can move forward and through the radiator. ![]() |

This water pump collar will solve your problem. Order a new pump gasket gasket while you are on the phone with Brattons.

Nope, when there was too much play it was rebuilt or the head was replaced.

I have the 4 blade fan, I wish there was an easy way to pull this water pump out, when I do should I go with a 2 blade fan? I have read the forums that say to lean the radiator forward.
