Did Everyone Have Their Sauerkraut Today?
We had our traditional sauerkraut and pork for dinner. I really don't believe in it but can't take the chance. Who knows, there might be another old Ford in my future.
Happy New Year!

Re: Did Everyone Have Their Saurkraut Today?
Yes We did. Is this only a tradition in certain areas? I never heard of this till I moved to PA. I grew up in the Midwest and don't remember ever having Pork and SauerKraut on New Years Day. Of course as a young man I usually had a headache on Jan 1.

Clete, Welcome aboard! I see this was your first post. I have no idea where the tradition came from. Growing up we always had cabbage in some manner on New Years Day. When I married a girl from East Liverpool Ohio, (next door to PA) her family had saurkraut and pork for New Years Day, which I prefer over cabbage. I don't really believe in it but why take a chance? Again, welcome aboard. Please introduce yourself to the guys. Bud Reynolds

Black eyed peas and collard greens is the tradition in the southern part of the US. Just had my fill of them a couple of hours ago.

Re: Did Everyone Have Their Saurkraut Today?
I'm from Atlanta, Ga. originally but I've never acquired a taste for collard greens or hog jowls... Now, pork rinds and Dr. Pepper... that's livin' LARGE...

Re: Did Everyone Have Their Saurkraut Today?
Seems to me that a lot of the "traditional New Year's" side dishes are designed to create flatulence. What is the history of that?! Fart out the old year or fart out the new. I'm confused.
I'm down here in Texas where we should have a mix of traditions from the east and Pa. and about all I know of is ham and black eyed peas. Historians please illuminate. |

Re: Did Everyone Have Their Saurkraut Today?
Not yet but my brother just got done canning a bunch. Home canned is the best in my opinion. Being about ten miles from Franksville, WI., the capital of Kraut production, we kind of grew up on the stuff. With Kielbasa, it can't be beat!
