Flathead ford to ???? Adapter plate. Anyone got a guess
Adapter plate is steel and about 1/4" thick. Adaptes a flathead ford transmission to what? Its not cadillac Oldsmobile or a pontiac.
It was bolted to a hildebrant aluminum adapter bell that was flatheadford with the early clutch fork to a Lasalle transmission. |

Re: Flathead ford to ???? Adapter plate. Anyone got a guess
Are you sure it's not for an early (fifties) Oldsmobile? I have one that looks a lot like that that fits my '49 Rocket. The only other engine I can think of is a very early ('51 to '53) Chrysler hemi, but it's not for that, because I had one and it recessed the transmission into the back of the engine about 3 inches.

I've looked at that image several times since you first posted it a while back. I believe the key is the three close-grouped holes at the top. Surely is a strange piece. Do you also have a pic of the aluminum piece that you say was attached? DD

Not '50s Olds/Cadillac, but perhaps Pontiac?

This one is smaller and diameter. I do think its for a engine block with an extended shelf. Last edited by skidmarks; 10-30-2016 at 02:49 PM. |

Wild guess Studebacker? Saw a 46 Ford in a junk yard with a Stude.

Stude is one of the first oddballs I looked at, besides Packards, too. I'm wondering if this may have been some commercial or industrial application. Different, for sure! DD

Re: Flathead ford to ???? Adapter plate. Anyone got a guess
I even tried looking at quite a few of the early inlines from the '40s and '50s. I tried to think of anything that guys possibly ran back then. Like you, I thought it MIGHT be for an extended bell like the early Hemis, because of how short, or THIN the adapter is. Obviously though, it ain't early Hemi. Again, I don't ever remember anything with those three top holes so close together. In fact, I can't think of a good reason WHY there would be three bolt holes that close together. Sure is a strange critter! DD

Hmmmmmmm......I wonder if it could possibly be some sort of "service" fixture, like to bolt a Ford trans case to for rebuilding? DD

55 to 60 Pontiac v8"s have 3 holes on top like that. That is my bet! Gary

Re: Flathead ford to ???? Adapter plate. Anyone got a guess
Ok. I looked again and the three holes are on the side. Here are some crappy pictures of my bellhousing from the 55 Pontiac v8 I had. Sorry for the slip up! Gary

If it had a LaSalle trans adapter on it I would think it's probably from the 50's.

Re: Flathead ford to ???? Adapter plate. Anyone got a guess
A flat plate adaptor like that could only have been used on the early types of motors that had an extended bell. I'm not that well up on these, but olds had them for example. A flat faced block (like an 8BA) is not a contender because there would not be enough standoff to accommodate the clutch etc. I can't say what it is, but can at least offer that you can rule out anything like the Pontiac shown above.
If the block had some sort of half bell adaptor then it's anyones guess. Mart. |

Re: Flathead ford to ???? Adapter plate. Anyone got a guess
Not trying to be a jerk but the hot rod magazines told me that Fords are no good because they have no interchangeability.
I have no idea what that adapter fits but so far I've heard about 6 different gm engines that it could fit. Is this evidence that the hot rod magazines were not as forthcoming as they should have been when describing the terrible interchangeability between the different gm engine lines? Chrysler interchangeability sucks too if you apply these same standards. There was a WHOLE LOT of biased journalism against Ford post Flathead era. Just saying. |
